D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

Ok, serious question: Why trust the DM more than the other players? [EDIT]: Ok, I just saw the post above mine...it sounds like you have had some really bad gaming experiences. Sorry to hear that. :/

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

Shared authorship is great. Takes a HUGE load of work of me as a DM. Mind you, we're aren't playing 5e; we're playing 13th Age where the use of Icon Dice naturally lends itself to this sort of thing. Characters had a history in the world before they started being played, presumably. What...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

Thanks for the response @Hussar , it's much appreciated and I feel we're in the same space as far as what we've seen and what we might be tired of seeing. I know you didn't ask for any suggestions, but for a campaign that is very much centred on one area and follows characters through their...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I am curious about what this means...the Avengers (at least in the MCU) had a fairly stable lineup, no?

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

I think it's more about motive. If the GM fudges a roll to avoid a crit on a hapless PC, I can understand (though the game already kind of takes this into account with how hard it is to die). If the GM fudges a roll because the villain "needs" to get away, or because it's more dramatic, or...

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I'm not @pemerton but I guess I would answer based on the narrative force of these scenarios: 1) The party needs an expert on obscure languages...if it's NOT the brother, then is the ensuing search for the expert meaningful narratively? Is there a way for the adventure to proceed without...

D&D General The Problem with Talking About D&D

There's a simpler way to deal with scouting that avoids the "decker" issue and also prevents it from taking up too much time. 1. DM assigns a DC based on the environment that is being scouted. 2. Scout makes a skill check of some kind (dependent on the environment, I suppose) Failure: Things...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

So, how do the people who think it's ok for the DM to fudge feel about players doing the same?

D&D 5E (2014) Perma-Death At Your Table: How Possible Is It?

If we fight named villains, it's possible. No dying against a bunch of nameless demons, but if there's a proper name villain, things get real...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

    I confess, I don't quite understand what you're saying here... :/

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

The thing about fudging is the philosophy and how only one person at the table gets to be philosophical. DM gets to fudge things in order to make a better/more dramatic/interesting/etc. story. Players also have a sense of what makes a better/more dramatic/interesting/etc. story...but never get...

D&D General The Problem with Talking About D&D

Interesting take...I have two questions based on it, though: 1) Is it possible to cheat in D&D? 2) Is the DM the only one who can change numbers in the middle of the game to make it more fun? If so, why?

D&D General The Problem with Talking About D&D

I think narrative solutions are not fudging (so, an enemy retreating is fine), but ignoring dice/mechanics/etc. is (IMO). After all, if one ignores dice, then why have them? As well, narratively dealing with "inconvenient" dice rolls is part of the fun, no?

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

Modern D&D does no such thing. I mean, how could it, considering the hyperbole used?

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

Couldn't tell you, since I didn't design the game and it's very obviously just a game mechanic that isn't trying to mimic something in real life. If I had to provide an in-world explanation, I'd say because it's a minor restorative spell (until it's cast with a higher level slot).

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

One can have a wound of the spirit, I suppose. Just pointing out that the game's official rules don't use the word 'healing' so there's no need for some weird crisis over "How is luck healed?" It's not that game. Never has been.

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

I don't see the bolded part as being true, at least as far as the rules are concerned. There is no mention of healing. Does one 'heal' from an illness or 'recover' from an illness?

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

    Why is it 'healing?'

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

There is no 'healing' with Cure Wounds, so there's no issue over 'healing Luck.' "A creature you touch regains a number of Hit Points equal to 1d8 + your Spellcasting ability modifier."

The DC Extended Animated Universe- A Consideration

My household loves the DCAU. While the first season of Justice League took a while to find its footing, by the end of Unlimited, we felt these were some of the best representations of the characters in media (which makes a kind of sense, since they weren't weighed down by decades of...
