D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

    He is being condescending, though.

D&D General How has D&D changed over the decades?

Seriously. "Sorry kids, I know I'm shirking my duty as your dad, but I am hoping to get more out of this game I'm playing!" To say to someone "You have the time," without knowing a lick about their life circumstances...well, it's pretty arrogant.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

True enough. I have no idea what the bar is if 5e's skill system is considered "excellent." As well, I'd ask "expands into what?"

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Worth mentioning that 5e has space for such design...AiME has something similar to what you describe.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Yeah, the three pillars were definitely not given the same level of design...I hope they weren't meant to all hold up the same ceiling.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Are you sure this is what he's saying? I thought his argument was "too intellectual" for you (your words). I don't see what you wrote above as an accurate account of his argument.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Haven't we been talking about the design of the game, and not individual tables, for a while now?

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

I completely agree; I believe I posted earlier that I would find 5e a bizarre choice for someone who doesn't like combat. I was just trying to point out that the relative merits of robust social mechanics or thin social mechanics are irrelevant when asking if the rules set of 5e actually has...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Just wanted to say, your examples have been constructive, well-thought out, and your patience is to be commended. All over an issue which is fairly obvious: D&D lacks robust social mechanics. This statement is not up for debate; it's seen as a "feature" for those who enjoy that the "rules get...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Well, it's both a "lack" and a "choice."

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

So when do the PCs gain levels, then?

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Same. Since we only have 2.5 hours to play a week (and it's online), it would seem a bit wasteful to use the time for an encounter like that when narrating it does the same thing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

There must be a ton of people who like the no-danger conclusion-already-known resource-saving combats though; 4e's philosophy was to expressly ignore those kinds of trivial encounters and the masses (at least appeared to) hated it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

I wonder what trying to make a character who can't contribute in combat at all would be like? A fighter who wears no armor, wields no weapons, and has put all their best stats in INT, WIS, and CHA? They're still going to get a fighting style, extra attacks, etc. though, so maybe not. A wizard...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

Indeed, D&D would be an odd RPG choice (considering what's out there) if one didn't like combat.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D 90% Combat?

It isn't. It is the same as my own table's experience and two others that I am aware of.

The Book of Boba Fett (spoilers)

I don't know...when I watch Clone Wars, everyone they encounter seem pretty familiar with the Jedi. In the end, 20 years really just isn't long enough, especially with all the long-lived races out there.

D&D General Chris just said why I hate wizard/fighter dynamic

...I didn't imply it was unworkable, did I?

D&D General Chris just said why I hate wizard/fighter dynamic

4e Essentials Executioner had something like that, no? Their "dailies" were the different poisons it could make.

D&D General Chris just said why I hate wizard/fighter dynamic

Well...the DMG is just under 30% about magic items. They may not be assumed, but that page count tells me they're heavily implied at the least.
