Pathfinder 2E Fighter Class Preview For Pathfinder 2nd Edition!

Fighters are still going to be about martial power. I would guess some of their class feats will be non combat options, but I don’t expect them to be RP machines. Basically this blog just gave us some of the Fighter feats you can choose. As well as telling you about AoO and martial training...

Bulmahn on Pathfinder 2 Design Goals; Plus Proficiency Clarifications & Archeologists!

I don't care that much about the verisimilitude of edge cases like that to actual effects on real gameplay. Unlike 5e I do want trained characters to be 1) better than lower level characters 2) better than their party members by enough to make it matter. I just don't want the gap wide enough...

There is also a small secondary consideration for why similar scaling. Their goal is to keep all d20 rolls on the same scale. Whether that is attack rolls, skills, saves or DC checks. This allows them to do things like use athletics check to do a combat maneuver instead of an attack roll. I...

Bulmahn on Pathfinder 2 Design Goals; Plus Proficiency Clarifications & Archeologists!

Dave they have been pretty explicit why they want untrained to be viable. Basically in PF1 at the start even if untrained (lets say something like stealth) the untrained fighter or sorcerer could be pretty decent. Lets compare 3 numbers at level 1. Rogue: 8 (4 dex + 3 class skill + 1 rank)...

Bulmahn on Pathfinder 2 Design Goals; Plus Proficiency Clarifications & Archeologists!

NPCs use different generation rules. Also having proficiency gates things. Like if you're untrained you just won't be able to do something a trained person can do, even if your modifier is higher.

Bulmahn on Pathfinder 2 Design Goals; Plus Proficiency Clarifications & Archeologists!

Well if they're adding level to the rolls its very easy to just recreate 5e in PF2 by just taking that part out. However they did say they tried level/2 instead of level and it didn't work. Curious why it didn't work. I know partly they want to have the higher level character feel very strong...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

Ancalgon has a good point about the armor. The scaling can work with the current formulas adding level of you assume armor gives no actual bonus to AC. Once you do that the current math breaks down and it becomes very hard to actually hit something, especially on second and third attacks. So...

Also I’ve heard conflicting things on the shield. We do know you only get the DR for raising the shield, but I’ve read mixed reports on whether you get the passive AC bonus for raising it or if you always have it.

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

Well ofc I am making assumptions on the math. You are as well. Regardless I don’t see them going to a ten on hit, 20 on crit system because it takes away the new mechanic they’re adding. We do know iterative attacks can hit on a -5/-10 (although rarely maybe on the second). I would guess they’re...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

I do think bonuses will certainly matter more if the balance between Attack and Armor Class is that close. Weapon Focus before was mostly used for feat prerequisites since most classes really didn’t need the bonus when at level ten it was only the difference between hitting on a 2 or a 3. But I...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

Armors have the same bonuses, and there is far more spells that raise AC than raise attack. Even if players focus on offense a bit more it doesn’t change the underlying math. I just don’t see them making a system where to hit on first iterative requires a 10 when they’re pushing a crits matter...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

We also have to consider things like power attack and iterative attacks. If level is part of AC bonus I’m not sure how those function very well anymore. In the one vs one level 10 I stated above with 16 attack/27 AC it means iterative attacks are basically useless and any modified to trade...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

Ahh so yeah let me restate my last post in light of yours Charlaquin. Yeah I can see Prof (including level) be used in this but I am not finding this that likely giving the crit feature. I’d be fine with it since I does think it fixes scaling, but i’m not sure if they’ll go that far. It could...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

You can have one of the two. You can have the 10 flat bonus like PF1 has, or you can have level scaling. You can’t have both. If you have both that means at level 10 your Ac would be 10 + prof (1) + ability (say 5) + armor (2) + level (10) leaving you with a 27 armor class. Your attack bonus for...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

I agree that’s more likely, I was responding to the idea of AC scaling by level. I could see them doing that since it does remove the PF1 issue of the balance of level one being all out of whack at level 8. My level one inquisitor had only a reasonable chance to hit people. My level 8 one with...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

i don’t think that math is going to work that way. Armor has never been a dice roll. Given that at level one with leather armor and 18 dex your armor by that calculation if you’re say expert would be 1 (level) + 2 (armor) + 1 (prof) + 4 (ability mod) leaving you with an armor class of 8...

    Pathfinder 2's Proficiency System Explored

I enjoyed 4e (it was the first tabletop version of the rules I played, I had played Baldur’s Gate and IWD and other games previously) and there was a lot of good things about it. I think the main thing people I talked to didn’t like was that classes felt a bit too similar, and that came from the...

How Pathfinder 2's Resonance Reduces Wand-Spamming; & Comparisons to 5E Discussed

Pathfinder Society (pathfinder organized play) has boons you gain from adventuring. It’s expected the first boon you purchase is a CLW wand, even if you can’t use it. Someone in your party will likely know UMD and you can loan them the wand for a few so they can poke/heal you up.
