See, this is the kind of DM that later did wonder how the PCs got that much magic gear ;) I've also seen DMs that never asked the PCs to pay for their Identify spells in later editions...And the price for Identify wasnt really a low one.

We have a checker board numbered 1 to 40 on the table. Once initiative is calculated every player places his name marker on the correct number, thats it. Fast and easy.

The party doesnt have a class that can take the main damage from the more dangerous creatures. That point alone is almost deadly with such an encounter as you had there. The argument about anticipating a hidden front guard is a bit cheap in my eyes. The part about the magic items was not too...

Hehe, our DM started to roll in the open for exactly the same reason..and now we curse his dice every time before we start playing. Just too bad it doesnt help as we still get beaten up badly all the time. I think I have to go buy some voodoo anti-dice recipe or so...

It would be an interesting feature of D&D:O if the player could switch to "PnP" mode where death is permanent (Death = roll new character). If you see a PC in PnP mode that is level 15 or so you can tell that he earned that level :) I would be highly intrigued by such a game mode.

If that quote comes from the villain in D&D Online right after he transformed you into a splotch on the floor I will buy this game, instantly.
