    Ammunition Woes

I guess that's what really got me - the fact that even in the book, there seemed to be two different voices on the issue. Thanks for all the input.

Trouble with Short Rest and Healing Word

Howabout a houserule for that to simplify bookkeeping - During a short rest, you can spend X healing surges to regain HP. If you spend more than one surge and have a leader in the party, lose X - 1 surges, minimum 1 surge. OR Once during a short rest, if the party has a leader in it...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

perhaps developing a "Character quirks, traits and flaws" ruleset independent of feats might suit your needs. You could perhaps begin to model this off of both feats (like channel divinity) and the backgrounds like we've seen for the FRPG character backgrounds and the "Characters of War" article.

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

I think the nerfing of the spell issue is a response to inconsistent DM handling of creative use of spells in 3.5. I feel that 4e tries to standardize everything to make it easier to DM - at least with the core books. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of some really cool spells - ( I loved...

    Ammunition Woes

Hi All - I played an archer in 3.5 and I have found the same problems now in 4e than I did then - there seems to be a set of rules in place to dictate the amount of ammunition and how it is used, but no method to procure more. I have seen 1st level adventurers set out with 450 arrows on them...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

I think beguiling tongue and things of that nature are a good example of what can be done - by adding more selectable utility powers ( the most numerous a character has) they can choose to have utility outside of combat. I think with a deep enough understanding of the flexibility of the skill...

    Acrobatics

I foresee our group requiring each stunt to be unique and necessary - certainly not usable every turn - that takes the cinematic quality away from it. Perhaps the same stunt only once an encounter.

    Perception clarification

I wanted to add that our group has the DM roll perception checks for the PC's so we avoid the "I search the same 5 foot area of wall for half an hour until I roll high enough". Some of the posters sound like they roll their own perception - we have found that we prefer the DM to do it.

    Poll: Drow PC's

It seems like the new dragon article about Drow really clarified what I had envisioned was the case for them in 4e. This seems to go along with what many of us had imagined was the case for these guys now.

    Game Balance

I think that this is not very well balanced - when it's good, its phenomenal and when it's bad - well, hope you are not already bloodied.

    Poll: Drow PC's

Good points, all - What I really also wanted to know is that no where in the FRPG does it say that you should expect trouble if you play a drow. Yes, we have all read the novels, we know from earlier editions - but the question is: Should those factors determine our judgment on the new drow...

    Poll: Drow PC's

We were discussing possible reactions to drow in 4e in my playgroup. Not particularly if you like the race or not, but how they are viewed by NPC's in your Forgotten Realms games. What are your feelings on playing them - specifically running encounters with Npc's when one or more drow are in...

Trouble with Short Rest and Healing Word

There was a question about this a few months ago - and a designer responded to it - Mike Mearls, maybe. They reinforced that it was planned to be that way, even if not explicitly spelled out in the PHB. I remember hearing about several Wizard's staff members reminding players that it was...

    [Adventurer's Vault] Problematic Items

seconded. a plus 6 longsword is not as cool (to most people) as a +5 vorpal.

Aiding anther for a skill check?

We had a player in our old 4e group always anxious to aid another for the mathematical benefits, even if it made no logical sense. Our DM imposed a house rule that if you fail the aid another check, you subtract 2 from the total. This kept aiding actions down to only skilled assistance ( and...

    KotS adjustment *spoiler*

Why would you even have a first level character in there ? He's simply outclassed. My experience with that has either been the character avoiding combat (that mathematically, he should not participate in) or him showing all of his valor and facing monsters that have no trouble hitting him and...

    Consecrated Ground and game Balance

Consecrated ground is a small area of effect. Yes, the cleric can move it as a move action, but that's his move and minor every round. All of the combats we have seen in 4e so far have been very dynamic, with lots of movement. If this is the case in your game, it should not be the overpowered...

    D&D 4E Grid-less 4e?

I think it boils down to the type of people you have involved with the game. I am a very visual person - if you give me instructions, no matter how close, I will get lost. But if I have a map, I can drive cross country. We used grids and minis back with 2nd ed years ago and used handy...

Differences between 3rd and 4th Edition

The books, as is, will not port to 4th edition. However 4e is so modular, that you could implement the parts of the books you like with relatively little work. The game systems are different - but with respect to your beast builder, between that book and the guidelines in the 4e DMG and MM, it...
