    Basic Character Sheets

Hi all - We are hosting a party for quite a few adults and wives of the players in our regular group - we thought it would be fun to play D&D as a one-off for a day. Not many have direct D&D experience, but they are all familiar with common elements of the game (HP, Ability scores, combat...

    Rogue: Artful or Dodger?

looks like he has second chance as an encounter power. That pretty much convinces me this little critter is a halfling. Oh and blinding barrage is devastating as a daily.

    D&D 4E 4e FAQ

Can we please just make a sticky with the links for these ? I have them bookmarked also, but the rest of my group never is able to find them.

    Making my first character

What you described just now sounds much more like a ranger or rogue in this setting - clearly a striker, not a defender. Any character can charge into any fray or bull rush - but some characters have encounter or even at will powers (rogue & ranger) that gives you more mobility. We have found...

    D&D 4E 4e Dungeon Master's Screen - whoa

I saw it wrapped in the store the other day and noted its thickness. I had heard poor things about it, though. Are there skill challenges on the screen ? Are they the correct (errata'ed DC's ?)

Minions - do you tell players who are minions and who are not in-game?

I have seen two Dm's do this both ways. One benefit is the party knowing "we can do this". The problem is when they are not clearly labeled and the party confuses an encounter they should flee from with one they believe contains many minions. A party TPKing itself on an encounter they believed...

RIP Take 20... Hello, Take 18!

Our group has adopted something very similar to the above errata. We have found it work very well so far.

How bad is the paladin going to be without armor in combat?

After thinking about this some more, I would do two things - Allow the players foreknowledge of this place - through use of streetwise - to know that this would be the kind of thing necessary for this adventure. and 2 - have a "floating parcel" of plate mail - available shortly into the...

How bad is the paladin going to be without armor in combat?

An entire adventure about sneaking and bluffing our way around a castle with only a little planned combat would not go over well with my group - Especially with no armor on - we would either abandon this hook or find another way around it - as an attempt to not be railroaded into a low-combat...

Tu Wrod the Warlock, Minion Sweeper Of Doom

This was debated and twinked shortly after 4e came out. Fey pact allowed you, I believe, to teleport repeatedly around the encounter to where the minions are. The player is really just shooting himself and his party in the foot - the DM will probably just abandon minions and render much of the...

    Grading Daily Powers

did you skip or overlook rogue daily 9th's ?

Are Minotaurs underpowered, or is high-level combat broken?

Ardulac - I believe there was a post by the wizards crew lately that did confirm the cheezy cold tactics for rogues. Perhaps someone nerdier than I can point out where that official statement was.

    Combat very swingy

My group began playing like the day after we all got the rules. One of the other players began a side game a few weeks ago - and the characters we built then were Vastly better. I had switched from a non-effective dwarf warlock (+5 to hit@ 1st lvl) to Halfling rogue (+9 to hit Ref@1st) and it...

New errata posted, stealth changes official

Frankly, as a gamer, I have been pretty dismayed at wizards' playtesting. Have you seen the playtest list ? There are scores of people I recognize that work for their Magic line - Hell, even Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic, was a playtester. Its not that these people are bad playtesters...

    Blinding Barrage + SA

It seems like that is the case, but with the one damage roll for all enemies, we have our doubts.

    Replacing dead party members

First, I would talk to all of your players - especially the warlock - to find out what it is they want from their characters. Why did he take the infernal route ? Maybe it it was flavor only, that is something you can partially flavor as a DM. There's nothing saying that a fey warlock can't be...

    Blinding Barrage + SA

How many, if any, targets in the blinding barrage (or any area attack) does Sneak attack apply against. Say my rogue has CA from going first in combat and decides to open fire on a group of baddies. He would have combat advantage on them, from what I understand and there is only one damage...

Powers that weren't as good as you thought or were better.

I was unsure at first what to choose for a infernal warlock daily - flames of phelegethos or armor or agathys. I went with flames for the first two levels. They sucked. Even with a 20 Con, I missed nearly every time. I swapped to the armor of agathys - combined with hellish rebuke on nearby...

    Warlock, which pact is best?

Haven - when I planned my starlock, I chose either Cha or Con and took only powers that related to those. You can take out-of pact powers for your prime stat with no penalty and often times, I found this was better than the split con/cha starlock I had in mind.

Does the character count as his ally

The paladin question was answered in the FAQ, by the way - 9. Can a Paladin gain healing from his own lay on hands ability? Yes he can.
