Worlds of Design: When Technology Changes the Game

In a fantasy setting, the battlefield use of magic is nicely depicted in the Wheel of Time setting by Robert Jordan. In the beginning of the series, the magic users are outside of the battlefield scene, in the sense, that they do not interfere with the direct war. Their stronghold was once...

    D&D General 2010: A Turning Point for D&D

In the late '80s/early '90s the game were still mostly unknown here (Hungary, eastern block), with a few people actually having books. The first Hungarian RPG just came out around that time. But we were still seen as weirdos. By the end of the '90s while the nerd/geek status remained, there were...

    EN Weekly Newsletter?

Indeed we got something last week. First I thought I have not re subscribed or something like that, so I'm not relieved, that it was not just me not getting the newsletter. Thank You Morrus!

TSR Jim Ward: SSI, Dungeons & Dragons and the Computer Industry

Two thing I lowed about those games: turn based combat and full party customization. Later games dropped one or both of those unfortunately. I used the same party throughout the Pool series, by the end they had back-stories and featured in some of the adventures I DMed as NPCs.

    How Expensive is Too Expensive?

Monte Cook became too expensive for me. The main problem is that if I'm honest with myself, I know I will not play the game (lack of time / people to play with), so I buy RPG for my own reading pleasure. And for that, these props laden product are just not worth it.

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2E Errata

Different industries work differently. In certain cars some component break/have problems more often than others. You cannot bring it back as their wear is normal, but just more often than in other cars. In scientific publications one cannot really issue an errata, albeit papers usually have...

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2E Errata

It is probably true for any kind of published stuff. No matter how many times you go through a 600 odd page manuscript, something will be left is, or put there during editing, or someone just insert the wrong figure/chart/etc. Of course in a perfect world such thing never happen.

Pathfinder 2E Low-level Wizards in PF2 - are they still underpowered?

my 2cents on the wizard/sorcerer damage at 1st level: (1) Comparison across editions Indeed a 1st level wizard is not going to kick ass. But this was always so, or I would say more so than previously. In AD&D (aka 2nd ed) wizard had 1 spell per day. Yes, one spell. Like a 1d4 magic missile. They...

Pathfinder 2E Low-level Wizards in PF2 - are they still underpowered?

I always viewed wizards as an utility class and not as primary damage dealers. Cantrips are there so that wizards could still feel wizardry and do not resort to crossbow/darts. But think about spells like Ant haul, Air bubble, Create water, Feather fall, illusion spells, Mending, Longstrider...

It's D&D's 40th anniversary. Tell me your D&D history, and what it means to you!

It was around 1989-1990. I heard about AD&D from some magazines and after playing some CRPG it was hinted that a paper based version also exist (without internet info spread slowly). There were no place in Hungary to buy foreign books. I went to the UK on some language course and found a DMG and...

D&D 5E (2014) Jonathan Tweet & Rob Heinsoo: Making their own 5th Edition?

Great news. I have to say I'm much more excited about this, than 5E. I feel 5E is too much 0E, which was outdated well before I even know that RPGs exists.

    L&L Turning & Churning

Agree! Agree! Don't agree. The cool change in 3.x was a tiny step forward to the "only specialty priest" paradigm. The cleric concept is just weird in a setting where there is anything beside Christianity. It reeks of Christian belief, from raise the dead, through turn undead to using only...

3rd Horseman of the Apocalypse: 4E Hits the Bargain Bin

I would love to get into such a store. Unfortunately, here in Hungary even AD&D materials are still at normal price. :(

    Morrus on... Races

Race should matter. They usually do not in D&D. A +1 to saves is roughly 1 or 2 levels. A +1 to hit is again 1 level of fighter or 2 levels of wizard. Thus most of the already existing 2-3E racial powers are overshadowed by class level quickly. Even the 2E +4-+5 magic/poison saves of dwarves...

Uniting the Editions, Part 3 - Poll

Non-Vancian magic: I know that Vancian magic IS D&D, however, this is a rule I always skipped as DM and our group never used in some 15+ years of gaming. I love how magic-users can adapt to the situation at hand, and not limited by their selection in the morning. Saving throw: My 2 cents on the...

How do you feel about the future of D&D after the official announcements?

Positive I love new systems. They are entertaining to read. I had very high hopes for 4E till I could have hoped for a D&D3.75. I do not like the actual 4E. It has amazing elements (creature design for example), but the PHB was. Well. Not for my taste. I know editions come too rapidly. At our...

Off to see the Wizards: The day that WotC showed me D&D 5th Edition

Indeed, I can spare some shelf space for some 4E book myself too. Then, after having 1m of 2nd ed, 1.5m of 3.X I could fill my first row of 4E.

4 Hours w/ RSD - Escapist Bonus Column

My 2 cents on the OGL debate: Please reread Monte Cook's assessment. The Open Game License as I See It, Part II The Open Game License as I See It, Part I The gist of it is that even people who enjoyed 3PP games bought the core book from Wizards. Most 3PP games were/are successful because...

4 Hours w/ RSD - Escapist Bonus Column

My very thought! Kids should be the target audience, who could be introduced to the hobby via their geek parents. If they are hooked, then they can go to the 160 page core book (maybe start with a less daunting one). GregoryOatmeal I will check out HeroQuest, albeit it is a boardgame. I'm...

4 Hours w/ RSD - Escapist Bonus Column

I loved the article. RPG goes through live phases like all of us does. I would say it is natural. It is a geek hobby. It won't cater to as many people as video games, card games or board games. I think RPG should not be compared to these areas. RPG should not be confused with fantasy and/or...
