D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

I was thinking equipment cards like similar in the Essentials kit or the magic item cards. You have the rules on the card and only read them when you need the equipment. You don't need to remember them. And it's something cool to handout to the players. So players now can have decks of...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

You can get the 2e books quite cheap on DMsGuild, even as Reprint ;)

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

But like with 5e Spelljammer that is not even a starting point. It is easier to run a 5e Spelljammer campaign by buying the 2e book on the dmsguild. You have to tweak some rules but at least you don't have to create a whole lot of stuff from scratch.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

But that is a chicken-egg problem. Of course good equipment descriptions and lists don't matter at most tables because they don't exist. People don't use mundane equipment because it doesn't have rules. And if a player wants to do something without magic with mundane items, DMs have to handwave...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

Yeah, and the different assumptions on what X is if it is not defined in the rulebook is probably one of the things that leads to most fights on the tables between players and dms. Like, early on in my first campaign I played in (Lost Mines) the group was camping and resting in the wild. My...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

Yeah, making up the fun stuff. I pay a RPG producing company the bucks to create the rules and mundane stuff that is not so fun to create or to hard to create. Like I could definitely create by myself a description on every mundane item in the PHB that incorporates how it interacts with the...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

Sounds like horrible players. Unless the Stein is magical in nature or made oyt of steel, it could be destroyed by a mere wooden door. As a German I consider myself an expert in all beer related topics ^^

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

I think that is a big issue. People playing with DMs they don't trust and think are toxic.

D&D General Why the resistance to D&D being a game?

Actually, D&D by itself is not a game. D&D is a game construction kit. It allows game designers (and DMs) to create games and DMs to run them as a Game with players. It is more akin to a programming language, computer game engin like unity or a Mapdesign-Programm of some games that include them...

D&D General Why the resistance to D&D being a game?

I think a big complaint is not that D&D is to gamey but that it becomes to similar to computer games (or Player treat it like such), which are inherently limited. Like... players who ask for skill checks instead of describing what their character is doing. That is computer gamey. Why? Because...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

I also wanted to bring up Torches. Mundane Items interact with rules. That's why a Torches have a bright and dim light radius like light giving spells, because if you play one of the two races that don't have Darkvision, such thing could matter. That's why water skins have a volume of water...

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

For my Homebrew-System I'm looking at some different casting options. First Idea, whoch could replace the D&D system: you make a Spellcheck-Roll: you roll a d20+magic attack ability modifier to see if you succed. You need to hit a 8+Spelllevel to successfully cast the spell. If you miss you...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

I would even say without the chore parts it would be less fun. Because doing something that feels hard (if it's fun it's not feeling hard) gives you a good feeling. Going to the Gym is hard. It is a chore. Bit after you finish it you feel better. You accomplished something. That's why I don't...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

So far what I have seen the most complains about 5e is the opposite. Not to much chore but it being to easy and boring. Like Wilderness exploration. It is not really a challenge. Why is it not a challenge? Because those People play without incumberance, without the tracking of mundane...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

I'm also running a Spelljammer Campaign since Januray. But like I said, I had to create most of the rules/how the spelljammer setting works myself. The players and I (me?) have a blast. I'm using the Spelljammer Set and see how lacking it really is. Like the Total Lack of any details. In my...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

But they don't do that consistently. Like if the spelljammer rules set would have been as good as ravenloft or ebberon, a lot less people would complain. With Spelljammer we got like barley anything. So even in comparison to other WotC 5e products Spelljammer is ... to use a neutral term...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

But what is there is not working as ship combat rules. If they would have left then out and just wrote "start with the boarding action" would have been better and more useful. These are literal broken rules that if used raw would lead to the most boring gaming experience ever.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

In Spelljammer the Ship Combat Rules are two pages. And what are they saying? Battle starts at either 250, 500 or 1000 feet. A spelljammer pilot can move the ship up its movement speed. When in 5 feet distance they can board another ship. They can crash into each other. They can use the mending...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

So you are agree that the 5e Spelljammer Shipcombat rules do not work (for your table)? :)

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

It looks like you don't want to understand what I'm saying and made up your mind beforehand. Encumberance works and interacts together with other rules to create meaningful interactions that force decision points in the game. Without encumberance, the players can just carry as much food as they...
