Is there no plan for a variant / optional rules section or a monster / spell / magic item design guide? Those don't, to me, seem to fit on those chapters.

I think it was more about him wanting new ideas and not finding them in Flee Mortals.

Maybe, he has over 500+ monsters on this website so I feel he has a good idea of monster design.

He said he plans on buying the MM revision for the art based on the previews. He is not really interested in more statblocks. He thinks its primary value is as an art book.

I think my DM would agree it was not as innovative as he hoped. He basically said he can do a better job.

Yep, my DM regretted purchasing Flee Mortals. He wasn't impressed. However, I know he plans on getting the new MM for the art lone (if it lives up to his hopes).

Personally, I most looking forward to the new art. If some of the dragon previews they dropped last year are previews of the MM art I am all in!

While agree with your general sentiment, the official Vecna for 5e is Vecna that archmage, not Vecna the god. That is his pre-ascension statblock. I do wonder if we get an updated statblock in the forthcoming adventure

That is not an issue of the MM but the DMG. Since that book is coming out first you should have your answer before this book comes out. I don't have an issue with this either way. Not a requirement in our game and this book will not have them so you can skip it. This is highly subjective...

But if they are just a troll, and it seems highly likely to me, then you are not likely to learn / understand anything from them.

No. They already said it needs to be staggered for printing reasons. They also said there will not be a boxed set / alt covers versions at first release
