D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Edit: Ok wait - this might be well out of date as these numbers are from 2017. Thanks. Halflings don't seem to be doing that badly. They're ahead of both Half Orcs and Gnomes by quite a bit, which isn't surprising. Genasi are more popular than halflings but that doesn't really surprise me...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I think this was due to the idea there would be big pushback against them. You see the same in 13th Age. A product of the edition war - people hated 4e so they hated everything about 4e In the end it didn't matter. Some people don't like them and won't use them, but it doesn't seem to be a...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Does anyone have a link to the most recent D&D beyond data in regard to what people are playing?

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Where do river halflings come from? I've done that since the early 2000s and always thought I just invented it? Is it Warhammer?

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

See my point earlier in the thread was: Halflings aren't very interesting but are very malleable and easy to rework in interesting ways. Elves and Dwarves aren't very interesting and aren't really all that easy to rework in interesting ways and still appeal to the players who want to play...

    D&D 5E (2014) Adapting BitD Flashbacks to D&D5E

Have the PCs make a 'plan'. Make this plan very vague, the sort of thing they do in making the plan rather than specific steps. Eg "I use my skill in history to try and find out any local stories about the mansion" Just a tiny step more than "I use History". Then have them roll the skill...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I think if you start a thread dedicated to alternative takes on halfling lore and not complaining about how much the current take sucks you will get positive responses. Assuming that’s what you want?

I suggest you start a thread then and ask for people suggestions about better lore for halflings.

Shrug. Isn't their another race that basically takes the cake for being completely forgotten? I think it starts with a G?

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

This is cool, but to me it runs into the problem of being basically a new race. I might use such a race in a game, especially if I was running a game based around nordic myths, but it does run into the issue that I'm no longer including a race from the Player's Handbook. If you have a player...

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

20th level seems like the natural endpoint because there's not really any spells higher than 9th level. There doesn't seem much point continuing to level up a caster beyond that - how do you top Wish really? You can have less levels, but if you want more you need to either change the spell...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

They can change whatever they like. It doesn't bother me as I'll only use it if I like it. My feeling about WotC lore is that it tends to be bland and dull across the board and is written more for product and brand identity purpose then with any real attempt at creativity. I don't understand...

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

I think I said something about a 20th level Wizard being a demigod on account of being able to cast Wish. (Which to me seems pretty fair). I would have thought it was obvious that I meant it pretty loosely. I didn't say anything about taking over a kingdom, although obviously that would...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

In the group I used to play with, and still do occasionally, although we don't meet very often, no one ever played an elf. We just all really hated elves. If we made up a campaign world with that group there would be no elves. It wouldn't occur to us to put in elves, I don't think it would...

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

I think if I did XP by combat levelling up would actually be very slow. It takes a long time to get through all those combats.

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

Starting games at higher levels is always going to be an issue for people, precisely because it's higher levels. Games tend to work more efficiently closer to the beginning and lose efficiency and gain complexity as you work through them. It's almost impossible to avoid unless you stop giving...

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

I addressed this in the post you quoted. Either you didn't read it (which is bizarre but seems to happen a lot around here), or you ignored it. If the latter why waste your time replying if you're not going to address what was said?

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

I think making King Azoun 20th level is silly, but a lot of things in D&D are somewhat silly. But in many ways higher level important NPCs are a consequence of the rules. If King Azoun is a 1st level Fighter a Bard with Expertise can just lie to his face. If he's say 10th level, then he at...

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

Presumaby D&D worlds tend to make these characters high level so the PCs can't just take over. Or you can go the Waterdeep route (which is cleverer) and make the rulers hidden.
