D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

I think it's likely that most people are using D&D hardbacks, so the lack of higher level characters has a lot to do with the fact that adventures don't go up that high. Exactly why they don't go that high is an interesting question in itself. I believe that Paizo started with adventure paths...

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

If I was in charge of 6e I would make the deliberate decision to end the PHB at either 12 or 14 (12 is a quite neat number actually as you can have 3 tiers of 4 levels each). I would includ levels 13-20 in the epic level handbook (as you'd have to include them for Tradition's sake). I would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Humans Only

Too me D&D is a rules set and a game structure and not really a setting. If the game is set in a world with fifteen different races, but features lots political intrigue and very little in the way of exploration and dungeons I probably wouldn't use D&D (although I feel I could if I really had...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

See. That's just it. No one complains that the wizard can prepare both Animate Dead and Fireball! But the historical record is very clear, evocation reached it's peak in the late 13th century* and the major advances in necromancy didn't take place until the huge spikes in residual negative...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Yes, but I'm not sure they fully realised that, at least not at first. They did try and sell it initially with a dungeon crawl adventure that it was notoriously unsuited for. It's seems to be reflexive for WOTC, the future is always 'back to the dungeon'.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

What they really needed to, and what 13th Age did, was to basically have lower level spell slots disappear as you level up. So it would be something like this Level 3: 4 2 Level 4: 4 3 Level 5: 3 3 2 It really doesn't matter if the number of lower level slots goes down (and eventually level 1...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

I think most people don't actually want to go back to the dungeon.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

It's the whole back to the dungeon thing. It makes a certain sense if you think of 5e as trying to emulate the basic old explore as far into the dungeon as you can style of play. (Even then it has issues, it's slower than something like B/X, making it a lot harder to get through all those...

Dragonlance (+) What Would You Want From 5e Dragonlance?

100 years, 1000, seems like a dramatically different setting to me. Which is fine, I guess, it just seemed odd to want to change the setting that much, and then worry about changing things like Gully Dwarves and Kender. Personally I think the best thing to do with Gully Dwarves would be to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Humans Only

In the end no. The game was after all based on the Silk road, and there were so many other actual historical cultures that I wanted to give a place to that it never felt important enough to really deal with them, and over time they were quietly forgotten. And those non-humans that did feature...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I don't see any reason given to reconsider the opinion that led you to reply in the first place. As I said to the other poster in the post you quoted: "convince me". (Or don't as you wish, but I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve otherwise).

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Well yeah. But I think in general it's a good principle to say that if you're not ok with an NPC potentially doing it to a PC, then it probably shouldn't work the other way either.

D&D 5E (2024) YOU are in charge of the next PHB! What do you change?

Ok. No need to make a song and dance about it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

I think stealing a component pouch is really a bit of a dick move, as we all mostly ignore the component thing because it's a drag. If you actually have your players buying bat guano from the market than it's different. But really, how do you think the players would react if they go to cast a...

Dragonlance (+) What Would You Want From 5e Dragonlance?

The poster I was responding to was endorsing making Dragonlance taking place in the far future of the setting, and that the War of the Lance should be ancient history.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

I'm not sure I've actually seen the three round fights people speak of. I've seen a few one round fights, but most tend to be more like four or five.
