    Knowledge checks remove mystery?

I think you'd be totally justified adding a rarity modifier to the knowledge check (or outright denying a knowledge check for certain monsters).

    Campaign Setting

Continue to run the one I have. That said, when I moved to 4e I pretty much redid everything to the point that it was a new setting (with many familiar elements for my players). I don't really like the idea of switching settings if I can avoid it because you lose the player's familiarity with...

    Knowledge checks remove mystery?

I tend to describe powers in general (non-mechanical) terms when this comes up. Instead of telling the PCs that a monster breathes acid when it becomes bloodied, I might say that you've heard that such creatures may breathe acid in the throws of combat. I don't give specific values for...

    Campaign Setting

Homebrew for me. I find that I just enjoy running a campaign more if I get to create everything from the ground up. I've tried to run published settings, but I just quickly get bored with them for some odd reason.

    It's Dark Sun

Reynolds is hit or miss with me. This is a total hit. A homerun even. Very evocative and striking.

Pathfinder 1E [MERGED] Pathfinder forum complaint threads

Seems like some people are making mountain out of molehills here and it really illustrates just how much resentment there is between porponents of the different versions of the game still exists. To those playing Pathfinder, I have a question: Do you think Pathfinder would be better served...

4E 2010 Setting: Place Your Bets

I'd love Birthright if for no other reason than getting my hands on a ruleset that has to do with the management of holdings, politics, and warfare.

Mercs, cohorts, and hirelings—do you let your players use them?

In one of my games we have two followers; a squire and a man-servant. Not only do I allow for it, I encourage it.

4E 2010 Setting: Place Your Bets

I voted Dark Sun, but only because of PHB3's inclusion of psionics makes it a natural fit. However, I'd be perfectly fine with Dragonlance. I'd prefer a new setting with a twist (not another kitchen sink setting please).

    Eclipse Phase: Sexy

I've had my eye on this for a little while now. I'll be interested to see what people think once they pick it up at GenCon.

    Frustrated searching (for encounters)

He-he, Asmor is a slut. ;) Oh I'm sure there would be some market, but I'm just not convinced there would be enough of that market to justify the products.

    Frustrated searching (for encounters)

Irrespective of 3PP relationship with WotC for 4e material, I wonder if there is as much of a market for this kind of product with 4e in the first place. Creating an encounter for 3.x was considerably more work than what is needed for 4e. You can create an encouter in about 5 minutes (that...

    4E Campaign Announcement Time/Date

One thing I find frustrating is the apparent need for each campaign setting to embrace every last aspect of 4e races and classes, meaning every campaign will include the kitchen sink. Bleh. I find that a campaign setting is often special as much for what it excludes in addition to new things...

    4. When EN World “pops a gasket”, where do you go for your rpg news?

When ENWorld goes bonkers I go into withdrawl syndrome (complete with cold sweat and the shakes). I tend to sit at the PC tapping F5 in the hopes that ENWorld is back up.

Breaking Away from the Traditional Setting Cultures

So a friend of mine is starting a new game inspired in large by Conan books. He’s included an Asian part of the world called Lao-Shiang. Not able to resist anything resembling Oriental Adventures, I crafted a character (a ranger) and re-skinned him with pulpy-wuxia flavored awesomeness. As a...

    Best Quality in a GM

There are just too many hats a good GM needs to wear for me to pick just one, but in the spirit of the thread I'll say a GM that doesn't lose site of the fact that we're all playing for fun (the GM included).

So, you're going to the nuthouse today...what book are you taking?

Definately would be one of the old TSR campaign settings (I loved the fluff back then). Front runners are Kara-Tur, Al'Qadim, and Planescape.

How do you design your adventures

This may sound a little artsy-fartsy, but I start by sitting around with no books and just try to picture a scene that I'd like to setup for the players. It may or may not involve fighting, but it will always strive to be dramatic and impactful on the campaign. Once I have that scene in mind I...

Have you converted your favorite novels into a campaign setting?

I wouldn't call it a conversion, but my current homebrew has been inspired (and contains some elements) from Malazan, the Name of the Wind, and the Belgariad books.
