Campaign Standards: Slavery yea or nay?

Depends on the group and the setting, as well as how you set it up. Last year I ran a few sessions in a world loosely based on Robert E Howard's Hyborea, which is the home of Conan the Barbarian. Howard depicts slaves and slaveholding societies in many of his Conan stories, so in my game I made...

D&D Insider - My main beef

/grognard This is becoming my problem with 4E as well, now that I'm diving into it full steam. I've tinkered with the rules in every edition, but in 4E people give me dire warnings about "messing with the math." There's a lot to like, but I have never wanted to adopt all the rules of any game...

    Love DMing, hate doing loot

That's what my buddy's doing. My new campaign is set in a sort of fantasy version of a post-apocalyptic wasteland, which means no economy, no use for coinage at all, no Magic Emporiums, and few opportunities to upgrade gear. So in addition to being fed up with tracking loot, I wanted to look...

    Setting-fluff terminology? Simple or Unique?

I'm like you---I love thematic terminology. Words have power and really bring out the feel of a setting for me. But there is a danger, as you've discovered: infuse your world with too much gobbledygook and players just start tuning it out. So there has to be a balance between the fun you as a...

    Love DMing, hate doing loot

I've been DMing since 1987, and I have enjoyed all the incarnations of D&D I've played since then. I'm running 4E now and I like the smooth modularity of the skill, magic and combat systems. But over the 8 years I DMed 3E, it completely killed my desire to track XP awards, encounter levels...

Pathfinder 1E WotC desperately needs to learn from Paizo and Privateer Press

I was really thinking of 2E when I wrote that. Terrible ruleset, but great fluff. Lots of rich campaign settings.

Pathfinder 1E WotC desperately needs to learn from Paizo and Privateer Press

As a reader and lover of fantasy literature, 4E is rather dull in comparison to its predecessors. As a DM, it's fantastic. This is because I have always tended to alter or discard the boxed fluff anyway; now there's nothing to alter or discard. All I need do is create.

    Hybrid Barbarian / Wizard Suggestions

I second this. One of my players ran a Str-based sorcerer and it worked really well.

No one discussing "The Plane Below"?

Meh. I browsed it. No interest. Which is pretty much my reaction to most 4E supplements. How can a game be so good in play, yet its books so dull at the same time?

What adventure module defines D&D to you?

Keep on the Borderlands. It was the first full-length module I owned, and I must have run three or four groups through it as a kid. It was a dungeon full of monsters and treasure. Can't get more D&D than that.

    Why aren't RPGs poplular

That's why I like it. It gives rules for things that need rules---swinging a sword, etc.---and leaves flexible things that don't require fixed solutions, such as sweet-talking a guard to get inside the city armory. As DM I can just assign a DC or hand-wave it, depending on the nature of the...

    Why aren't RPGs poplular

RPGs require commitment, so much so that many of us look down upon folks who don't put in the time to familiarize themselves with the rules. When most people think of games, they think of things short, easy to play, and not requiring a lot of thought. RPGs are the exact opposite. So there are...

4E - 18 Months Later: Love it or hate it?

Love it. I ended my 3.5E game at 15th level and vowed to never again spend 8 hours to prep for a 4-hour game. 4E rules are concise and modular and make sense from a gamist perspective, yet allow for creative storytelling without needing to justify everything through rules arcana the way I felt...

    Divine Power Excerpt: Favored Soul

I was wondering that myself. I figure there are two explanations: one, it's a typo, or two, it's meant to work in conjunction with other sources of flight---boots, spells from other people, etc.
