D&D 5E (2024) Multiclassing: Slots and Prepared Spells

Are all the Force effects evocation? I thought other wall spells were classically conjuration, though I may be misremembering. Taking a quick look at the 2014 PH (I don't have 2024 handy rn) I see that all of the Wall spells are evocation, except Wall of Thorns, which is conjuration.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Along related lines, one factor which just sold me on ordering a copy of Poul Anderson's There Will be Time is that it's under 200 pages. I miss when SF&F was full of good cheap paperbacks around that length.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

When I was a teenager my brother and I encountered it at a couple of local conventions and then joined Raven's home game for a while. As far as gonzo games go it was a lot of fun.

Yup. Plus resistance training can help counteract loss of bone density, is good for joint health and strength, etc. I wish I had started younger so I could have started evangelizing it to my parents earlier. :/

    What Is A Superhero?

The ones who don't engage in fisticuffs usually still use their powers to fight crime or directly neutralize foes. Whether that be Kitty Pryde phasing through someone to stun them, or Dr. Manhattan being able to blip an enemy's weapon or their whole physical being out of existence. Or make...

Best superhero movie of all time? (Nominations thread)

    The best villains usually are.

Oof. I see what you mean. There are still three I really like coming up, but fingers crossed and you have my hopes that you find joys and treasures among the letters and nonfiction.

...yeah, I've been a fan of Heinlein since I read Starship Troopers when I was an eleven year old military brat, but I've spared myself the ones I already know will suck. 😅

Fair. I just read Donella Meadows' Thinking in Systems, am in the middle of Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem, and just ordered Poul Anderson's There Will be Time. OTOH I'm also in the middle of Nachtway's Strictly Fantasy, so there's at least one on this side of the daisies.

    Old Games Show and Tell

Skerples included them in The Monster Overhaul. An excerpt: "Appearance: A heap of shadow with teeth. A mole-lamprey. A bat-ghoul. A nightmare. Grues cannot be seen by conventional sight; only those who can see without light have ventured to describe its form. Voice: Silent. Wants: To bite off...

    OSR BrOSR

I can't blame you. I spend a ton of time in OSR circles which are explicitly inclusive and antifash (r/osr has blacklisted the worst folks, and you'll usually see comments about the lower-profile ones), but I've certainly had blood-angering disappointments from creators who used to be broadly...

TSR Moldvay Basic Set Misprint Box

Yeah, misprints definitely have value in some circles. There's a collector subculture for them and discussion groups devoted to it for Magic: The Gathering, for example.

Yeah, it's disappointing and gross. I had read a few of his posts on AD&D play, which were pretty good, before spotting the fascist stuff.

    OSR BrOSR

Sure. I get that. When we discussed this earlier in the thread (six months ago) I quoted a few of his tweets reflecting Nazi ideology, blaming the lack of authors like Lord Dunsany, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, Manly Wade Wellman, and Poul Anderson in his church library on a...

My original copy from 2020 is also a trade paperback, and was inexpensive. Looks like the one you've linked to (Appendix N: Weird Tales from the Roots of Dungeons & Dragons) is a revised and expanded edition for the 2024 50th anniversary of D&D. The original version is showing at more than...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Oh, it matters. This is one of the reasons multiclassing with spellcasters has always been a bit iffy, because being behind on caster levels can definitely hurt. And optimizing in the 3.x days meant avoiding races with a level adjustment, and picking prestige classes which wouldn't cost you any...

Not to be confused with Peter Bebergal's Appendix N: The Eldritch Roots of Dungeons & Dragons, which is an excellent short story collection focusing mostly on Appendix N works, with some from Moldvay Basic's inspirational reading recommendations.
