    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

Marshall's data has been called into question, and Grossman has some serious detractors. I don't think his assertions are very well supported.

    Sinners (2025)

He's only 39, right? I was a teenager for OWoD and I'm ten years older.

    Our Physical Fitness

I was out late Saturday night so got a late start Sunday and my energy level wasn't what I might hope, but I still got in a good long full body session. Four sets of machine pec flies (all the dumbbell benches were taken when I got there), followed by three circuits on a bench of dumbbell...

Agreed. I wonder if Coogler is aware of V:tM at all and whether that could have been a direct homage.

    Sinners (2025)

Absolutely the opening narration established a mythological/magical connection between musical and poetic traditions in Africa, Ireland, and elsewhere. It references Filidh, although they were poets and seers rather than musicians (musicians were substantially lower-rank/class under the Brehon...

    Sinners (2025)

Ah, that being an intended parallel to more modern African coerced conversion makes sense. When he talks about it in the movie it set my "bad history" meter off a bit. It reminded me of 20th century ahistorical tropes about "the burning times" and that the snakes from Jocelyn's hagiography...

    Sinners (2025)

Yes. It was a process that took place over several centuries, and we have surviving period texts (such as the Uraicecht Becc and Bretha Crólige) showing that, for example, druids retained legal rights and status, though much diminished, until about 500 years after Patrick. Christianity became...

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

Absolutely. On a related note, did you ever read Delta's series of articles on archery in D&D, where he tries to apply some good real world math and stats? https://deltasdnd.blogspot.com/2011/03/basic-d-on-archery.html

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

May be tangential and orthogonal to what you want, but I'm intrigued by the concept of achieving greater realism through greater abstraction, as opposed to greater granularity: https://maziriansgarden.blogspot.com/2021/04/injury-and-abstract-combat-round.html

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

This reminds me of the weirdly baroque initiative for OD&D article Gygax had in The Strategic Review where he goes into speed of movement in plate armor vs. unarmored Conan-types, and makes it so that the latter is better at closing the distance to and curb-stomping an M-U trying to Lightning...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I had occasion again this week to trot out my most used quote from him. It's apropos absurdly often in the last decades or so, especially in reference to certain (social and other) media figures. “Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They...

Ohh, that old John Wick thing. Ugh.

Judge decides case based on AI-hallucinated case law

You have this a bit backwards. Those jurisdictions and "reasonable person" standards are common, but warning labels largely get instituted because of exceptional cases, or exceptional laws in important markets (like California's Prop 65).

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

Definitely. Though with the smaller absolute values I'm usually dealing with in OSR, the math will still be pretty quick if they drop the ball on that.

    Our Physical Fitness

Got in last night for a consecutive session but a little lighter. Flat smith machine barbell bench four sets + drop sets, lat pulldowns the same, seated dumbbell lateral raises three & drops. I think I actually feel my chest a little this morning, which is rare. It always lags/virtually never...

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

By mentioning wands, are you thinking about 3e? Potions and scrolls and prepared healing spells: Mostly outside, with rare emergency use of a bigger potion (Extra Healing or similar) or more powerful healing spell (Cure Serious or equivalent) in combat if a front-liner is really getting...

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

There's definitely some appeal to that simplification, but it wouldn't be achieving the same effect. It's not exactly going to "swamp" the dice, at least not until higher levels. It really comes down to how good you want the healing to be. Tying what to hit dice? Are you talking about 5E now...

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

@Nikosandros can you give any more details? I still don't have WWN and just heard about that mechanic this week.

    OSR Healing tweak - proportionality

Interesting. I wouldn't think this would be a major issue in TSR editions or clones of same simply because there isn't that much healing available in the first place. It's true that Cure Light would be much stronger, and maybe that would be a real problem in AD&D since 1e and 2e give bonus...
