    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

This is my sort of controversial and confrontational position. I have a clear agenda for saying that 5e is a platform bigger than just the two 5e compatible versions of D&D (D&D 2014 and D&D 2024). I think recognizing that 5e eclipses any one game makes the whole hobby stronger. The hobby is...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

Yes there is. A5e's 5e compatible ruleset is 100% independent. It does not even reference the 5.1 CC document. The EN world publishing team spent a bunch of work last year making it completely independent and releasing it – an SRD 5x bigger than the 5.1 SRD. Black Flag is a 5e compatible SRD...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

D&D 2014 isn't 5e compatible? Really? Now I'm really confused. Snark aside, I think we're stuck on the idea that either we consider 5e to be D&D or we consider D&D to be one of several 5e compatible systems. I'm in the latter camp and I think it makes the whole hobby stronger when we consider...

So let's let them know that 5e means something more!

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

I really don’t understand why it’s so controversial to say: 5e used to refer to compatibility with the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons (2014). Today 5e means general compatibility with several 5e-based core systems and thousands of supplements, campaigns, and adventures. I don’t think any...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

    Yes! D&D 2014 and D&D 2024 are both 5e compatible.

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

They include material easily compatible with one another. I use ToVs luck system in all my 5e games. I think D&D 2024 has stuff easily dropped into A5E or ToV like surprise or exhaustion. A5Es system for supply and safe havens can drop right into ToV or D&D. That’s the cool bit. All these 5e...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

I agree completely. And one of those brand names is D&D. D&D 2014, D&D 2024, A5E, TOV. These are all variants of 5e and have largely compatible material between them and thousands of other 5e compatible supplements.

    D&D 5E (2014) Radically shrinking stat blocks

Cool idea! I bet it could be shrunk further by omitting the speed of a monster unless its significantly faster or slower. I get your take on darkvision but I bet we could come up with some default vision for most monsters like Shadowdark has (monsters see in the dark, characters don't). That...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

I'd argue the exact same thing happened to Kobold Press who has risen quite well over the 5e time and now has their own flavor of 5e to build off of for as long as they choose. They're not as big as Paizo, obviously, but they seem to be doing fine. I absolutely believe people will stick to 5e...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

What I mean is there are many games built on 5e now – complete core games. Level Up A5e has its own completely independent 5e compatible SRD. I'm using this one for the City of Arches. Tales of the Valiant is 5e. Level Up Advanced 5e is 5e. FateForge is 5e. D&D has two different versions, both...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

Shadowdark actually uses the 5.1 SRD but I don't consider it "5e" because its generally not compatible. It doesn't have subclasses and the same monsters. For me, 5e compatibility means I can grab a monster from one book and run it in another. I've used TOV Monster Vault monsters in my A5e game...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

I'm all caught up in the thread for the moment! I have a few points I'd like to throw at the wall. First, this incredible series of interviews with former creators of D&D for almost every edition is mind blowing and it gives inside views into a lot of the topics being discussed here. It's...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

Isn't this exactly what happened to Pathfinder? WOTC moved to D&D 4e and a bunch of D&D 3.5 people said "nope". Paizo said "hey, check this out!" Of course it wasn't as big as D&D but it build a pretty good sized audience over the past fifteen years. There are lots of people who play lots of...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

I agree and many of them are really close to D&D but with their own opinionated design direction. They have fantastic production value, brilliant rules and design, great art. Many of them would sit very comfortably next to any D&D book.

It doesn’t matter. Only one of those actually happened. I expect it’ll be at least four years before they’d attempt a 6e. If you want something built in its bones and totally new, may I recommend Shadow of the Weird Wizard, Cypher system, 13th Age, or Pathfinder 2 — all designed by former D&D...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

I am one publisher who isn’t doing that. City of Arches is 5e and compatible D&D 2024, D&D 2014, Level Up A5e (what I’m currently playing it in), and Tales of the Valiant. It’s important to me that it supports any of those systems.

D&D 5E (2024) Uni and the hunt for the Lost Horn

I have a copy to run at our FLGS this coming Tuesday. I hear there are a few bugs in the character sheets but I don't know them for sure. The adventure and the characters are 4th level. Spoilers for the characters of the adventure and a potentially fun thing to add for DMs:

D&D 5E (2024) MichaelSomething's Official Statement on the 2014 D&D rules going out of print

Another way to think of this is a four billion dollar company using its branding to help bring people into our hobby where we can show them how awesome this hobby can be, including being independent of the very four billion dollar company that brought them here. I'm totally good with Hasbro...
