Mike Mearls and his Gamma World project!

Does everything have to have potential for multimedia? I'm cool with just a TTRPG product, please and thank you.

D&D 5E (2014) What should an official Indian subcontinent inspired setting have?

Canadian. Which funny enough on Wikipedia, apparently 17.7% is Asian (which is including East Asian of course).

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's A Look At 3 Adventures from the Radiant Citadel

Lol I didn't know that... well, you'd think that they'd post here just to gauge what NOT to do, right?

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's A Look At 3 Adventures from the Radiant Citadel

Eh, considering they grow their profits every year, I wonder how much the D&D team thinks about social media criticism. It seems they take criticism seriously when it also translates into actual articles on Polygon for example... but if the critics can't get that far, I'm not sure they care.

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

Which part do you believe WotC thinks is stupid? You've probably said this before, but this thread got really derailed by the whole "SOULS" thing.

D&D General Appendix EN - What one book/series inspires your D&D?

I'll do two, one I'm reading now and another I read as a child. Journey to the West is a really great example of world-building, making an adventuring party, a clearly defined goal (go to the West to deliver some scrolls!) that is continually derailed by fun and thrilling side-quests. It's a...

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

The whole "They aren't real, don't have souls, but should you still care about them?" is kind of an existential question that would be wild for a D&D game to explore... see HBO's Westworld for inspiration. Which honestly, Westworld could inspire it's own Domain all on its own.

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

I'll add, folks are quick to develop a pattern in short-term trends. The past two years, we got Strixhaven, Witchlight, and now this. You could argue that's a pattern of "Happy, optimistic, Disney!" like some are... but the two years before them we got Icewind Dale, Ravenloft, and Avernus which...

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

40k was also written as a parody of Dune, Alien, and even Paradise Lost. Yeah it's grimdark, but it's also pointing out the inherent ironies and ridiculousness of the whole setting. The more 40k moves to Space Marines being heroic, the more I'm reminded that they were originally intended to be...

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

It totally does challenge your absolutist argument (I strongly disagree that nothing in 5E Ravenloft can matter), but no worries man you do you.

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

It does, and it doesn't. A good chunk of the book is about how to run horror, but it definitely isn't ALL GLOOM ALL THE TIME like @doctorbadwolf says. There's literally a piece called "Cultivating Hope." Cultivating Hope In Ravenloft, the Dark Powers control reality, the Mists foil escape...

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

I mean, yes you can (save individuals with souls)? There are a lot of examples throughout the book of individuals with souls being able to escape the Domains. Even Curse of Strahd has examples of how you can set characters with souls free. I get you don't like the theming, but it doesn't seem...

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

Yeah Dark Sun definitely feels more bleak to me than Ravenloft. You can't even leave, and at least with Ravenloft when you beat the Darklord you can flee the cursed place.

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

It's pretty funny how on this thread, many people are complaining this new book is "proof that 5E is too noblebright/noblepunk" and 5E Revanloft exists and says "EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING IS DOOOMED!"

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

If a scientist told me the world is doomed, and had irrefutable proof, I'd probably have to have the action-hero response of "Never tell me the odds!" and try to save the world anyway. But that'd be more of a coping mechanism than any real hope!
