D&D 5E (2014) Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

Back in the 'old days' I always used to have players roll stats (with me present), but it provides such randomness and inconsistent power ranges within the group that I now agree with the camp that say it detracts from the fun. In my current campaign the Druid rolled so high he was using scores...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Int 8 Party: A Solution?

How about applying any negative (only) INT modifier to the DEX modifier for Initiative to reflect dullwittedness, if you want to house rule it? In my own game, I would just throw in reminders of the characters poor memory. Usually, my players are fairly inebriated on booze by the end of the...

Awesome and surprising news! Two words. Strontium. Dog. Now. OK, that's three words :)

Pillars of Eternity 2 crowdfunding adds PnP RPG starter rules

Feargus Urquhart of Obsidian Entertainment is on the advisory board and part of that involves putting out their games through Fig. I suspect they didn't actually particularly need to crowdfund, thanks to the reasonable success of the first game.

Pillars of Eternity 2 crowdfunding adds PnP RPG starter rules

Fig allows individuals to actively invest lump sums in the game and share in the profits, rather than just back the project to receive a slightly discounted product. Not that *I've* reserved an investment and am now promoting the game, nooooo (full disclosure - erm...yes I have....although due...

    Problematic player.

How much of a friend IRL is this player to you and the other players? If the answer is 'not all that much' - throw the player out/don't invite back. [edit I just reread your post, and he's a good friend, so you can't do that I guess!] If the person is a valued friend to you, you'll need to be...

Stats. Hate them ? Love them ? Think they can be better ? Or an outdated concept ?

The simple answer in the case of D&D would probably be an Athletics check....

D&D 5E (2014) Running Phandelver - help me make it less like a video game

Just add in some completely irrelevant fluff conversations in addition to the ones from the quest-givers. Invent some new NPCs, who just have a beer with the PCs and tell them about their boring, mundane (or better still, interesting and entertaining but irrelevant to the adventure) problems .

Pillars of Eternity 2 crowdfunding adds PnP RPG starter rules

In case anyone over here is interested, the Fig.co (KS alternative) campaign for cRPG Pillars of Eternity 2 just added a pen and paper RPG starter set of rules. A new entrant in the PnP market coming up in future? Also - the game looks great, check out the Lore section of Update #9, I find that...

D&D 5E (2014) Ten little things my players hate the most. But I use as much as possible in 5ed.

Helldritch: I'd call that as a little unfair if I were a player - at least until the ranger had got off the first readied shot. A bit too prescient of monsters to know the trigger for a readied action before it even happened. Although not outside the realms of possibility, it leans too far...

D&D 5E (2014) Ten little things my players hate the most. But I use as much as possible in 5ed.

Great post. Many of the tips you suggest can be overcome with a bit of thought from the players, which makes them even better as tips. For example the one below any player worth his or her salt is going to ready an action to take out the ranged attackers when they show themselves, but it might...

    D&D 5E (2014) there aren't enough slow Dwarves with Axes! ;)

Just don't use feats. They are an optional rule, if using Sharpshooter and Crossbow Expert is causing imbalance - don't allow them. I took a break from D&D between about 1985 and 2015. Feats to me are an alien powergaming concept, to be frowned upon and tutted at :). Also in environments where...

    D&D 5E (2014) Longswords

Adventures in Middle Earth solves this with the broadsword (finesse, but not versatile) Just add that. Longsword is for STR fighters who want to sometimes go 1H, sometimes 2H. For whatever reason. (Actually, I'd have named them the other way round, but I guess for consistency it's better the...

D&D 5E (2014) Book With Page Falling Out

All of my books are close to falling apart - even my copy of SCAG. I'm in the UK and I didn't keep any receipts, oops! I started up a face to face campaign and all five of my players bought 5e PHBs too, and commented on the poor binding. WotC should really be ashamed of the quality of product...

    Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide

4 out of 5 rating for Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide I found the guide pretty useful in comparison with some of the reviewers here. The Storm Sorceror, Mastermind and Swashbuckler Rogues and the specific backgrounds such as Town Watch and Cloistered Scholar are all nice additions. The subject...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

Aha, cool. My lot haven't got that far yet (busy running round Rivergard Keep with Scarlet Moon Hall the probable next destination - they've got the distinct impression they shouldn't be going down into Tyar-Besil until they've checked out the surface outposts :) ). Maybe I'll have it work that...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

If I may ask, Nebulous - how come you've ended up allowing any one of the elemental weapons to close any node, rather than the published version of each specific weapon for the matching specific node?

This I believe is the crux of the issues around rolling

D&D 5E (2014) Rolled character stats higher than point buy?

Back when I played before 5e (which is, basically, 1e days) I would have summarily dismissed any fool who dared suggest some sort of 'standard array'. I would probably have mocked them roundly as a buffoon, idiot and a halfwit. Take those 3d6 and hope for the best. Having rediscovered the game...
