Sword Coast Legends Developer n-Space Closes Down After 21 Years

I pre-ordered SCL but then cancelled and got refunded when I saw further details - such as per-encounter abilities, hugely limited class options and limited race options, and so on. I bought Pillars of Eternity and both expansions and play them occasionally. I have currently gone back to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Maximillian's earthen grasp and spell range

I would have ruled that, but checking the PHB gives : "Once a spell is cast, its effects aren't limited by its range, unless the spell's description says otherwise." (top of p203) Therefore I think if you move out of range the spell persists and restrains the target until the duration or you...

D&D 5E (2014) noob questions: sneak attack, firing into melee and opportunity attacks

I used to do that too, before I was aware of the DMG rule. I use the latter now just because it's canon (-ish).

D&D 5E (2014) noob questions: sneak attack, firing into melee and opportunity attacks

Actually since the AC of the target is increased by 2, a 'covering' character needs 2 higher base AC than the target to avoid ever being hit...I guess in this case the shot hits the covering character but bounces off armour, shield, tough hide, etc.

Requesting Death House help - SPOILERS AHEAD - DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE NOT DMING

Yes, it seems the story is indicating the parents *deliberately* forgot about the children. Hence the bricked up windows and horrorrrrrrrrr.

    D&D 5E (2014) Was I in the wrong?

You quoted everything except the important bit of my post: "The DM here has made an assumption on what the character does/doesn't know, which does not match the player's own assumptions." I'm talking about the character - a fictional entity that doesn't actually exist to 'know' anything. It's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Was I in the wrong?

51 pages??? The answer is "Yes, you were in the wrong". Justification - if a player says something like "But I'd never have done that if I'd known it meant [x or y]" then the player clearly feels he or she has not been given enough information to avoid an undesirable outcome. The DM here has...

    D&D 5E (2014) Barovia's world

Did you get in on this? Not an entire world, but a large city nonetheless. I went for the 5e version. Before I knew the postage cost to Europe (gulp). https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/froggodgames/the-lost-lands-the-blight-richard-petts-crooked-ci/description

    D&D 5E (2014) Barovia's world

I'm toying with the idea of using 'real world' characters transported to Barovia if I run this - e.g. a french knight, a trainee ninja, a west african voodoo priest and a buddhist monk. They all stagger into the mists and find themselves....in Barovia! Only issue is the outrageous culture clash...

D&D 5E (2014) Is this an abuse of the Advantage/Disadvantage system?

The trouble is if you give advantage/disadvantage for something once and a similar situation occurs again, your credibility is going to be undermined if you then say 'Nah, it doesn't grant advantage this time'. Eventually, you'll be on close to permanent advantage for the players and...

D&D 5E (2014) DM question: Should I take it all back?

The other outcome appears to be a TPK? You might be better off asking them whether you should all start a new campaign with new PCs, glossing over the finale of that last one and leaving it to the imagination what *actually* happened. I don't know what setting you're using or what you've...

    D&D 5E (2014) Where are the options?

Giving my personal perspective on this, I am very pleased this is WotCs approach. I stopped playing D&D 20 years ago in a bout of 'realism-itis'. I tried some other systems but found them overcomplicated (go figure...) so I stopped with RPGs altogether. I'm now recovered from 'realisim-itis'...

D&D 5E (2014) Does higher ground grant advantage?

Since you don't get advantage, or any kind of bonus, for being significantly taller than an opponent (e.g. a human gets no advantage when attacking a halfling, nor vice versa with disadvantage) I would say no. The difficult terrain slowing down an opponent, and the increased visibility granted...

    HELP! I'm a new DM

One thing I found helpful is to draw up a sheet of all the monsters the players might encounter in a session in advance, and roll separate hit points for them to avoid just using the 'standard' HPs. The sheet includes AC, attacks (to hit and damage, multiattack etc), initiative and saving throw...

Not using Grid / minis / pawns

I've never used a grid, neither now with 5e or back the last time I DMed, with 1e. A piece of paper with some scrawled positions on it sometimes gets used if I myself feel like the players need to be aware their positioning is important - like when they recently attempted a long rest in a...

EN World New GMs, players, read the first post in this thread! (updated 5/21)

Just a quick note to say I'm recruiting players for a D&D 5e Princes of the Apocalypse play-by-forum, although it's over on rpggeek.com not ENWorld (just by dint of me being more active there). Hope it's OK to post that here - just delete this and chastise me, if not. I've made a post there on...
