WotC may have sent the Pinkertons to a magic leakers home. Update: WotC confirms it and has a response.

The head of PR at WOTC must be just so pissed at this point. I dont know a lot about modern Pinkertons. Maybe they've turned into just another security company no better or worse than any other, I somewhat doubt it but could easily be wrong. But the problem for WOTC is that most people are...

D&D Movie/TV D&D: Honor Among Thieves Open Discussion [Full Spoilers]

I may write a more detailed break down of my thoughts later but overall the movie was a great D&D movie because it felt like D&D campaign. Like i could almost see in my head the group around the table joking and talking as the scenes happened. The first scene demonstrates it beautifully with...

Where do we stand on Harry Potter?

So the problem with a nuanced discussion is that it requires both sides to be arguing in good faith. Right now one sides stance is "trans people are evil and shouldnt exist." So arguments like yours, no matter how well meaning, are going to be used to try and eliminate Trans people altogether...

Where do we stand on Harry Potter?

Just to throw in my 2 cents in, seperating the art from the artist can be fine but in the case of JK when you support her by buying Harry Potter stuff, when you help the popularity of her art grow you are increasing her wealth and influence. Wealth and influence she will actively use to try and...

Where do we stand on Harry Potter?

Orson scott card is notoriously anti-gay and an opponent of gay marriage. In an odd parallel hes one of the other authors i refuse to support because hes still alive and has objectionable views.

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

So the thing that ChatGpt brings to my mind, particularly in regards to essays, is math. Most people on these boards are probably old enough to remember when a teacher told you "you won't always have a calculator in your pocket." Now days most people not only have a calculator they have a mini...

You've just taken over WotC, what do you do?

See my answer was find out what kind of golden parachute clause i have for when i inevitably get fired, because i am not qualified.

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

my two thoughts 1) welp I suppose I can buy Hasbro stuff again. Didn't really expect this much of a concession. 2) Something is going on behind closed doors at WOTC that we won't hear about for 5-10 years. I don't know what kind of arguments or power struggles are happening but no way we get...

Boilerplate Language: Worrying about the OGL (Part 4)

I will say that the OGL 1.2 not being an open license is part of the issue. 1) with the OGL 1.0a WOTC promised to keep an eternal open license. If they had updated to the 1.2 or 1.1 with another open license with the explanation of "hey the 1.0a has some structural weaknesses and legal...

Boilerplate Language: Worrying about the OGL (Part 4)

So while I can't speak for everyone I can say I don't think the boilerplate clauses are where most people are getting the feeling of Hasbro's ill intent. Its more a matter of the breaking of their word, the attempt to take royalties, and them acting generally untrustworthy. If most of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Getting Rid of Variable Weapon Damage- An Immodest Proposal

    A) I do prefer variable damage if for no other reason then to give my less used dice their weekly workouts. The poor D12 needs to occasionally see sunshine also. B) are you kidding? If trees screamed all the time I would be more likely to cut the leafy leafers down! C) So I do like this idea...

WotC Unveils Draft of New Open Gaming License

Yeah as much as I care about the subject personally D&D is not Hasbros number one priority. That would be MTG by a country mile. D&D simply isn't as profitable as a lot of other things that Hasbro is doing. They may be looking to change that but as of now it's less a matter of "this is costing...

WotC Unveils Draft of New Open Gaming License

So the crux of the issue for me is that WOTC has already demonstrated they are very comfortable going back on their word if they believe it's in their best interests. Even if the current staff are 100% pure in intention (Which I have doubts about) and only interested in using this benevolently...

D&D 5E (2014) What Is The Value of Stunning Strike?

So worth noting that stunning strike is better then hideous laughter if for no other reason then you can't cast hideous laughter 4 times a turn. Stunning strike is a boss killer and legendary resistance eater, but that's about it.

Legal Eagle ft Matt Colville on the OGL

So as someone who does prefer 3d6 (in addition to the bell curve i think it gives more room to play with in terms of mechanics) i understand why the d20 is standard. The probability is easy, the range is wide enough to have a variety of results/targets, the resolution is quick.

Legal Eagle ft Matt Colville on the OGL

Yeah that pretty much aligns with what i was thinking. I mentioned halfling because it originating with that lawsuit and D&D makes it a little more murky compared to say Elf which is very clear. Some of the magic items they could likely claim to, but id have to look it over to he sure.

Legal Eagle ft Matt Colville on the OGL

So it might be interesting to go through the SRD and see how many things in there are actually copyrightable. My instinct is that like 95% isnt with a few exceptions (like maybe halflings). Thing is that being legally in the wrong doesnt stop WOTC from suing you into bankrputcy.

    Critical Role Issues Statement

So whatever we hear publicly form CR is likely tied up by contracts and constrained by what their lawyers will ok for them to say. Keep in mind that doesnt mean they arent letting WOTC know what they think. Nothing is certain but based on the few hints we've gotten it seems CR is against this...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

"Give a beggar a million gold and the first thing he'll buy is bread. After though he'll remember there are many other things you can buy." I'm sure a desire to protect their brand is part of WOTCs reason for the OGL changes. Im also sure that its not the only thing they'll use it for. Really...

The Paranoid's Guide: Brief Thoughts on the Recent Timeline of the OGL

I highly suspect that Paizo knew the OGL 1.1 was coming and what were seeing now is all the stuff they had prepared for that. Dont see why they would bother leaking it though. The backlash (from the public and 3pp) was gonna be terrible whether it was leaked or announced. To my mind the most...
