    D&D 5E (2014) Sticking with D&D?

So my current campaign is three sessions in and using 5e so I'll likely finish that up. After? I'll probably take this as an opportunity to test out a few systems I've been wanting to try and see what I like. I can't say I won't ever play D&D again but unless WOTC does some serious backtracking...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Yes but those things are hard and require effort, time, and an understanding of your product and costumers. You know what doesn't require effort or understanding? Hiring an expensive lawyer.

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

So my suspicion is that part of it is them not liking not having complete control over how people perceive D&D. To most people, especially people who aren't TTRPG players, the difference between Pathfinder, D&D 5e, and a third party book made to be compatible with 5e is pretty much non-existent...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

I also wonder how much is them trying to crack down and control the D&D brand while they expand it into other spaces. I can very much see this as them looking to make D&D movies, games, tv shows, etc and deciding they want more control over how people percieve D&D before they do so. Or maybe...

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

So part of the problem is that it is still a good deal. D&D, and TRPG's in general, being so huge and widespread is mostly because of the OGL. Saying it's not a good deal for WOTC is like me claiming that the car I bought six months ago isn't a good deal for me because I already have my car why...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

So as some quick examples -Destroying public goodwill with moves like the 30th anniversary addition and the Walking dead secret lair. -Pushing the power level on cards to try and drive people to purchase new packs at the expense of formats like Modern and Standard (which are key to keeping long...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

So I doubt that this move will make a significant impact on the sales of say OneD&D/5.5. As you said most people aren't that invested in whether the OGL exists or even aware of it. I do think it will make an impact in say 5,10,15 years as less and less people enter and stay in the hobby...

OGL: What Are The Publishers Saying [UPDATED]

I will chip in to say that their lowering stock prices is pretty much Hasbro's own fault. for about.... 6? years or so they've repeatedly made decisions with MTG that have focused on making short term profits over the long term health of the hobby, and I've been waiting for it to bite them in...

Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

Yeah as a MTG fan ive been on the fence about full boycotting WOTC for years but they hadn't quite gotten me there. This'll probably change things which will suck because i love both D&D and MTG.

New OGL - what would be acceptable? (+)

So obligatory IANAL, but i have heard discussions in other places that wording like this in licensing is not uncommon to protect against possible lawsuits if they develope something similiar to something else independently. For example MCDM uses the new license and reports to WOTC "hey we're...

Quotes from OGL 1.1 (via Linda Condega)

WotC is getting crapped on HARD by the community right now. This is a whole lot of bad PR for them and the longer it goes on the harder it will be for them to undo it. If they weren't planning on trying to do the thing that everyone is hating on them for they would have made an announcement as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Teleport Houserule: Remove the Off-Target %distance

So the the general answer to this would be no, but to be fair 2 out of 4 options in the teleport spell as written I probably don't know beforehand. If you arrive off target not only do I have to do calculations but I likely also have to make up the area where you show up (Unless it's lucky...

    D&D General I DM because...

So the question is a bit hard because my group only exists because I started to DM. It was more a "I want to play D&D. Fine I'll just DM so at least I can play." and then I DMed pretty much straight for... 8ish. Last few years I've gotten some breaks with other guys stepping up and we now...

D&D General XP Awards for -- what????

This is pretty much how I approach it. Most of the time I do away with XP and just use milestone leveling, but If I do use XP I'm using it to reinforce the type of campaign I want. If I award XP for killing things players are going to try and kill everything. If I reward XP for exploration...

D&D General XP Awards for -- what????

Like a lot here It's mostly campaign dependent. Adventure of the week style just hanging out I'm probably doing session based. Pre-Written mostly linear campaign/story- I'm probably going to do something milestone based. Hex-Crawl exploration style- I'll make a list of particular actions that...

    D&D 5E (2014) "I Forgot I Had It"

So I don't have any good stories of me personally forgetting (More because I don't play as much than because I remember) but I have a good story about some of my players forgetting their abilities. So we decide to do a short adventure (3-4 sessions) in between campaigns as a kinda palet clenser...

D&D General How to work with players who wont accept any setbacks/defeat?

Thanks everyone for all the advice. It did help put some things in perspective and a few posts really helped me see it from my players perspective. So update for anyone who is interested we met on Sunday and spent around 30 minutes chatting before the game. I expressed how I was feeling and gave...

D&D General How to work with players who wont accept any setbacks/defeat?

So talking to one of my players he described a feeling of "not wanting retreat to always mean a lose." And that he feels the consequences of retreating are campaign ending. I tried explaining that unfortunately retreating does pretty much mean youve lost. If your on a quest and you run away...

D&D General How to work with players who wont accept any setbacks/defeat?

So if it was specific to this scenario i would but my problem is a more underlying one. Ive seen similiar behavior in d&d for much longer the new system just helped clarify it. Im not worried about one bad session or incident. Im worried about a pattern of behavior.
