    D&D 5E (2024) Magic Item Crafting oddities

The boots are great. The broom way less so... who except witches and maybe mages with a little bit of self respect uses brooms. Imagine a knight in armor and a shield balancong on one of them and even trying to cast spells. The potion is a bit too rare though, when it is just based on a 3rd...

    D&D 5E (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

I hope so. At least in the MM 2014, there are CR 1/4 drows and they are only going up to CR 8 for the Priestess. Those can easily be covered by generic NPC stat blocks with standard drow traits added and basic drow poison (which is already in the DMG 2024). But as soon as you get to splat...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

It used to be that everything but humans were demihumans or monsters. Elfs, dwarves, gnomes, halflings were classified as such. Humans had special rules regarding multiclassing. So you are not totally out of your mind. Having dwarves and elves as very close to humans is tradition, probably...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

In 5e, hold person is way weaker than in ADnD. A hit from hold person took you out of the whole fight. Saves vs paralyzation were not that good for many characters. Then consider that it was a multi target spell by default which gave a penalty if you only targeted two persons (-1) or a single...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

Recategorizing classic antagonist species as "monsters" helps solving some dilemmas. I wish they had been going a bit farther in the base rules. I wish the whole spell section got an overhaul. No more single save and suck spells. But I enjoy seeing a bit more courageous changes in the MM. And...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

Goblins, gith and so on are not ordinary folks. Player species are. And by all means, in my experience, humanoids are the most common enemies. And those spells are very low level for what they do. I think that is not a bad idea. I actually like that. But in most cases spells are cast by other...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

Do we know that extract brain will still only work on humanoids? Do you have special insight? I don't know if you are wrong or right. Maybe you are right, then we need to see how that descends into lore.

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

There used to be monstrous humanoids. Or humanoid as a subtype. Both were not affected by hold or charm person as they were not humanoid. Goliath, kuo toa, yua-ti all fall under that category. So in some ways for some creatures, those new categorizations are actually bringing them closer to...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

See post above. Aasimars used to be outsiders in 3e. Elves are no feys though too. I think you can draw the line anywhere you want in a make believe game. Accepting that helps a lot. If one disapproves with a change, just change that detail back. I am not sure about goblins. I don't mind or...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

Thats a thing with your ex... To the topic: 3e had a lot of playable species that were not humanoids. Aasimar were classified as outsiders. And this meant they were immune to all those humanoid spells. But they also had a level adjustment. In a later species book, they added the option of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

I still suspect the trait list that was in the DMG 5.14 makes an appearance in the new MM. It would be weird if they left customization out.

Derros already changed to aberrations in MMotM. Very convenient for my current adventure.

D&D 5E (2024) Testing against the Gold Dragon

Maybe. Maybe not. But not all encounters are equally easy for all kinds of party composition. If the monk or bars would be very good here, I had no problems with that. I think the monk is very good now. Especially in one vs one fights. But add in some extra hitter and suddenly one reaction does...

D&D 5E (2024) Testing against the Gold Dragon

If it does not get used on the same character over and over again, it is okish. Independent from your post: I think we have seen that the power level of the gold dragon is spot on.

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual 2025 Aberrations & Oozes Video

That is a very very backward take. So you say, every orc needs to be exactly the same or do you mean, you want a copy of every npc stat block that is appropriate for your view of orcs with the added trait: aggressive.

I don´t exactly know what you mean, but they explicitely mentioned in the video that there may be rare exceptions. I was immediately reminded of Hugh and the Borg.

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual 2025 Aberrations & Oozes Video

I think new DMs probably buy new adventures. And since the MM 2025 features a conversion guide, I am 99% sure they will be covered. New DMs are not as easily confused as you think. Most are quite clever and creative people. And even if it is not in the MM, they will probably figure out that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Humanoids in the MM...

Yeah. I would have been ok with goblins joining the orcs. But then, you have to draw a line somewhere. And I especially love the aberration category now. I think the new categorization overall is big improvement and makes the game more interesting. I am really looking forward to the new MM...

Exactly. This is why I think, we should start looking at medium difficulty encounters as standard.

Not really. NPC stat blocks might be useful. I guess there will be a warrior that can be perfectly used as Orc warrior. And since I always think that orcs need a less dangerous variation, NPC blocks might be handy.
