D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

After reading carefully, I got what you meant. It is just an unusual notation from a Math teacher´s point of view. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Ok. So your notation is wrong. The math behind it is close. You are indeed just off by 5%. It is 23-9=14. So you need 14 to hit. So you miss on a 13 and lower. So it is 13/20 = 65% miss chance. And thus a 35% hit chance. Actually math would be easier if you did not have to just reach the...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Ok, your math is even more wonky. You add +9 to your roll. So if AC is 20, you hit on rolls of 11 to 20. This are 10 sides of a d20. Now your chance to hit is 50%.

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

    Sorry. Your math is wrong. It is 6/20 = 30% and 4/20 = 20%

    D&D 5E (2024) Guess the next 3rd party D&D Beyond book.

Conpatible, yes, but not up to date with 5.24 No. I don't mean that and I already told you that my choice of words was sloppy. That was how many people here used it in the 5.24 transitioning and I was arguing as you do now. So yes. My bad. Yeah. See above. I already agreed with you. Again...

    D&D 5E (2024) Guess the next 3rd party D&D Beyond book.

Ok. So yes. I was not very careful with my wording. But it has enough changes so integration is not without some adaptions. Like weapons not mentioned in the rule book miss mastery traits. I guess the monstrous menange does not need a lot of adaptions (one monster references the doom...

    D&D 5E (2024) Guess the next 3rd party D&D Beyond book.

Yeah. 5.24 is compatible to 5.14 and LU are compatible. So LU and 5.24 are two different childs. Which means that usually they are less compatible with each other than towards their parent. Same goes for ToV.

Yes... more or less. Less so than 5.14 to 5.24 and do you remember all the noise about that around here?

    D&D 5E (2024) Guess the next 3rd party D&D Beyond book.

I don't think LevelUP is what WotC is looking for anyway. It is not exactly* compatible with 5e. *It is an alternate version with slightly different rules.

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

I like the no concentration disable. Potentilally for 2 rounds. One to flee, one to come back. My NPCs used it on the PCs to reposition them unfavourably and initiate the fight on their terms.

My gelatinous cube got slow locked... other than that I have not noticed enemies being stunlocked all the time. Let's see how it will go on later at higher levels. I think hp of enemies goes down fast to be honest. The only anoying part is book keeping.

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Trick for the casters is to spend the right amount of spells. Not too many and not too few.

    D&D 5E (2014) Running several combats in a row

I missed, which level your party is. But I have found out, that for level 3 or 4 characters, such fights do work very well in 5.24 at least. Just don't do 4 hard encounters back to back. Instead opt for one deadly encounter spread over 3 or 4 easy encounters. If you do that, you don't need a...

And still my statement is no less true.

    D&D 5E (2014) Running several combats in a row

Gladly there is no numbers multiplyer anymore. And that actually makes combat balanced better in 2024, even in the lower levels where the budged is nearly identical (note that 2014 adds the monsters compares which difficulty you beat, while 2024 gives you a budget to spend on monsters). For...

D&D 5E (2024) Two Weapon Fighting and Nick article

While I won't allow swapping melee weapons to be able to dual wield, my decision about thrown weapons is not done. In that case, throwing away the weapon to make room for a weapon that explicitely allows to be drawn mid attack action seems ok to me and actually quite cool.

D&D 5E (2024) Should skills for a campaign based on the 1800s be different from standard D&D

I think D&D should generally have different skills. And an expanded system for tools like in xanathar's guide. Primary Skills: only cover adventuring skills: Athletics Stealth Endurance/Concentration Investigation Perception Influence Secondary Skills and tools Will cover everything else...

D&D 5E (2014) Drawbacks to Increasing Monster AC Across the Board?

In my recent games I noticed, that giving CR < 1/2 mobs better armor and some extra str or dex really makes them really nice minions. AC 18 (chain + shield) and +5 to hit, 1d8+3 damage with around 11 to 14 hp is usually enough to make them a threat. 11 hp means a level 1 burning hands kills them...

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

An need to. Depends on the level. Until level 4, one short rest or none at all has worked well so far. Caster have only 6 slots of not too impactful spells. And if they are impactful, they are best followed by martials hacking on what is left or what is disabled. Then short rest is no short...
