    D&D 5E (2014) Old School Initiative

So you'd have to roll initiative every round, or how does it work? That might slow things down, but I've never tried it, and I am curious. A small thing I use from the older editions is randomizing who a given creature hits. My players are pretty whiny and feel targeted when a monster hits...

    Mixing variants? 5e

New to the game and already a min-maxer. That's brutal.

(KS) The Hidden Halls of Hazakor – A 5th Edition Adventure for beginning DMs

Sounds fairly interesting, but with LMoP being so cheap and so good, it's hard to justify buying this. It would be nice with more material that encourages people to DM, though. It's a great role, but it seems that many find it scary.

    D&D 5E (2014) Running a randomly-generated dungeon one-shot

Building on that, I found the Redbrand part of Lost Mines of Phandelver to be a great one-shot. Some investigation in the city, with a good bit of RP which then culminates with the exploration of the manor. Alternatively the intro goblin dungeon would work great for a new group, but might be a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running a randomly-generated dungeon one-shot

Link doesn't work. Anyway, I'd suggest the good ol' KISS approach: Keep It Simple, Stupid. Seems like you're setting yourself up for a lot of unnecessary work given your limited experience. Why not just run a simpler one-shot until you have more experience?

It's Time To Pre-Order Your Copy Of Into The Borderlands

I haven't played the original. I really like the idea of this book, but it does seem like massive overkill to have such a huge book. I'll definitely wait for user reviews before purchasing anything.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mearls' "Firing" tweet

To be fair, it's a very common concept. It's called virtue signaling and is done to fit in with the in-group and/or gain favor/status/approval.

All opinions are equal, but some opinions are more equal than others.

D&D 5E (2014) Into the Borderlands Goodman Games B1 and B2 archival reprint update and FAQ!

The buzz surrounding this release has piqued my interest. I've never played it before but might pick it up and play through it with new players! How long do you think it will take? Will it be like LMoP?

D&D 5E (2014) The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (TftYP) playthrough

Hi everyone, When I started researching and preparing The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan, I had a hard time finding resources and feedback. I'm creating this thread both to tell my players' story, and in hopes that someone else who is preparing the dungeon can benefit from it. I think the dungeon...

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 2

I will probably be following CR if I have time. I usually watch a bit while eating or browsing the internet, but I did find the first episode to be fairly boring. Mercer is eloquent and a great DM though, even if I think that he's also too kind to the players. I hope he won't become too scared...

D&D 5E (2014) Running Tomb of Horrors. Advice?

I've read a lot about ToH because I have a strange infatuation with it even though I haven't run it yet. It does seem like the consensus is that the Yawning Portal version is very easily survivable and not nearly as deadly as the AD&D module. A common suggestion is pumping up the trap damage...

D&D 5E (2014) PC Permadeath: Yea or Nay?

Yes, fighting dragons when the dragons can't kill you (or if they do, you just respawn 5 minutes later) is great, exciting fun.

D&D 5E (2014) PC Permadeath: Yea or Nay?

This is such a utilitarian and weak mentality. The satisfaction gained from overcoming challenges is infinitely more rewarding than the simple "fun" achieved from overcoming obstacles where failure is not even a realistic option. This has nothing to do with character death.

D&D 5E (2014) PC Permadeath: Yea or Nay?

Death is meaningless in real life too, why should it be different at the table? Provided that the DM isn't out to get the PCs, then they died because of their own actions and choices. I'm definitely in the group of people who think that removing perma death removes any tension and feeling of...

D&D 5E (2014) Handing over the DM reins, now I need a character

I've played a Barbarian in two different one-shots. They're fun, but simple. The damage is cool, but for longer campaigns I'd probably prefer a little more versatility. Guess it's a good thing I'm the ForeverDM and playing more than a one-shot won't happen... :.-(

D&D 5E (2014) New born hatchling of a DM starting his first campaign in epic proportions! XD

You really really have to understand that running a simple, good adventure ("Rescue the blacksmith's daughter from the goblins in their cave!") is ten million times better than an overly-complicated overly-ambitious mess. DM's talk all the time about players not caring about the world, history...

    D&D 5E (2014) So I ran an oldschool competitive dungeon in 5e...

That's an interesting way of handling it! The Yawning Portal module says that when a total of 3-4 characters walk over a given pressure plate, then the trap triggers. Which means that when they're just walking along waiting for me to narrate when something happens, that something will often be a...
