That's a fair point of view. Do you feel that the paladin should evolve to be more similar to wizards and clerics?

I don't see it as a "massive design challenge" to use things that already exist within the paladin class framework and already exist as building blocks of 5e class design. Why do you feel that it would be a MASSIVE disruption to the game when it isn't currently one?

As said, worked examples of possible alternatives include the 5e monk (ki points,) 5e sorcerer (metamagic,) 5e warlock (varying able to modify Eldritch Blast,) and 4e Psionic Classes. Reading some of the 5e24 previews, similar ideas have been used for other classes (such as the rogue being able...

No. There wouldn't be spell slots.

I am not effectively calling to give more spell slots. As I understand it, the 5e24 version receives spells earlier. As my suggestion was to not use spell slots, the claim that I want to "effectively" add spell slots is objectively false.

Does the monk gain spell slots in 5e24?

How would what I suggested be incompatible with the rules? I'm using building blocks that already exist within the framework of the game.

No, because there are already examples of how to do that within the framework of 5e. None of the upcasting concerns or much of anything you mentioned applies. There are essentially 3 questions: - What amount of points can be spent in one turn? -On what can those points be spent? -What are the...

Completely changing how backgrounds work; feats going from "optional" to baked in to character creation; an overhaul of class & species... That's 3 out of 3 building blocks for character creation. I'm not so sure I would categorize that as "tweaks." Perhaps it isn't a full engine rebuild, but...

I don't see it as any more effort than the rebuild that occured. I'd argue that it's less effort because there's zero requirement to deal with spell slots at all. It's more like changing the oil and realizing that you might want to use a funnel. Even if it did turn out to be an engine...

I would have preferred to make the other smites work more like Divine Smite. You could have had a basic Smite chassis and then be able to spend resources (that are not spell slots) to power and modify the divine power being channeled into an attack. As said previously, looking at how the monk...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

Warlocks are spellcasters, yet function different. Monks can produce spell-like effects. Clerics have channel divinity. Etc, etc. Those classes (especially the warlock) appear to be well liked, so there are examples of successfully doing things differently with mechanics to produce a...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

From a mechanics perspective, it makes sense in that I understand how it works. I wouldn't say that the current approach is the best approach though. 5e24 could have presented the paladin as something with its own identity by embracing more of what the paladin was already doing and taking...

Yes and no. For the Monk, they can be used for abilities that aren't spells. Using that concept for paladins could function a little bit more like how 4th Edition Psionics worked, but with paladin fluff.

    D&D 5E (2024) New Jeremy Crawford Interviews

Question: Instead of looking at spellcasters for how to "improve" the paladin, why not take some inspiration from the monk? Smite could have been powered by a limited pool of "piety points." If you want a handful of actual spells, have those also powered by the points -in the same way the 4...

For me, the two half-races were a way to explore the struggles of mixed heritages; as well, they both represented different reflections of humanity and the variety of things that someone with mixed heritage faces when navigating life. Being a mix of both while situationally neither is a unique...

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

I like the idea of using a screen. However, I've found that it creates a barrier to being able to interact with players. I prefer to not use one.

Going the other way, you could question why there are any mechanics for species at all. Isn't it enough to say you look like a dwarf?
