    D&D 5E (2014) Using NPC Spellcasters

Nice point, I usually assume that some cantrips/spells go for utility things and hence make give cantrips/spells to combat-mostly NPCs. @ Hawk Diesel I am a bit worried about winging it due to balance issues and the risk to make players feel "unfair". How do you handle this to keep yours on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Using NPC Spellcasters

After reading a couple of published adventures and playing a bit as a player, I have an impression that some (most?) DMs shun using NPC spellcasters unless it is a BBEG. Me personally, while running DnD standard, magic-abundant worlds, I use at least a few low-level spellcasters in any humanoid...

D&D 5E (2014) My players are using my favorite classes against me lol

I would suggest making hard challenges that characters will be good at and not the other way round. They clearly want to excel at certain things, so make them involved and satisfied - give them challenges that will let them use all the cool stuff they've taken.

D&D 5E (2014) Can Someone Assess this Encounter Difficulty

I would chose to respectfully disagree with DMMike. In my book, this is all really bad advice.

D&D 5E (2014) Grind fest is imminnent, how can I prevent it?

Mentioned several times already in the thread, thank you.

D&D 5E (2014) Can Someone Assess this Encounter Difficulty

I am a bit lost here. You know party composition and what have they been through recently but you don't know their level?

D&D 5E (2014) Can Someone Assess this Encounter Difficulty

Quickleaf wintericedrop Do we know the party level? I am kind of totally missing from the OP. Also, party numbers, composition and builds (even a brief description) will help greatly. A lot depends on the party. This looks like a boss fight, so environment definitely deserves some work. If I...

D&D 5E (2014) Need help for complex encounter: Gates of Firestorm Peak.

Thanks for the clarification. IIRC per vanila 5e rules Duergar could not shrink in size. I don't like the idea that their plan is to scary off the invaders. They must be pretty sure that whoever is coming should be pretty determined. Or is there another, potentialy easier-looking way in...

D&D 5E (2014) Need help for complex encounter: Gates of Firestorm Peak.

Ugh man, I love complex encounters. First, I want to figure out what do you want, as an encounter designer, for your players to experience. So far I get the impression that you are spending too much effort reworking the old encounter to the new reality. My recommendation would be to scrap it...

D&D 5E (2014) LMoP - Help us with Party Composition

Well, with heavy armor profficiency and being one AC higher than normal ... I'd guess the answer is yes. I have considered this option before posting.

D&D 5E (2014) LMoP - Help us with Party Composition

Thanks everyone for the input! Defineteky getting an impression that the player asking for a DMgen doesn't want to play anything too complicated. Eltab what do you mean by "Forge Cleric isn't tank-friendly"?

D&D 5E (2014) LMoP - Help us with Party Composition

Intro After me deciding to try a printed module for the first time, three of my friends who have previously played my home-brew campaign decided to give it a try, too. And they brought another guy, who I will be DM-ing for the first time. So we are set to begin the Lost Mine of Phandelver...

None, because it would obsolete all other out of combat healing.

D&D 5E (2014) Klaw's Tomb of Annihilation Post Game Show! Session #1 - A Player Character Died Tonight!

Klaudius Rex Goliaths speak Giant, do they? As a player - it depends greatly on your DMing and group style. Generally when there is a group of evil humanoids are in possesion of an object I need and it is not possible to communicate with them, the general course of action is clear. Execution...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Encounter Building advice in XGtE

I am starting LMoP soon, I will check adventure as printed vs. DMG vs. XGtE vs. factual gameplay to make a better assesment of difficulty.

Or even better, some rarer language in possesion of one or more of the PCs. Say, Giant? Also makes total sense for the Goblin to know.

D&D 5E (2014) A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

Running intelligent NPCs as intelligent, life-valuing beings definetely helps. Also, for most encounters, have a "win condition" for the enemies and this should not be killing the PCs at least a significant % of the time.

D&D 5E (2014) How is 5th edition in respects to magic item creation?

D&D 5E (2014) How is 5th edition in respects to magic item creation?

I can recommend the magic-item-crafting rules on donjon as a good starting point for a homebrew ruling of this. I'm running pretty complex magic items in my games (no plain +1 longswords) so I let players get creative with what their characters are trying to create. I don't let them control the...

D&D 5E (2014) List of magic items from "Lost Mine of Phendelver"

Well, different games assume different power level of PCs. I've never run a published adventure myself, so I am probably not the best person to comment on this. But I believe that the guys who write those are better DMs than I am and even I do take into account the impact of magic items I put...
