D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I consider 5e before the last 2-3 years almost a different game, that's all. Launch 5e compared to now are very differentiated for me. It'll just be easier maybe when 6e, 5.5e, one d&d, etc.. comes out... maybe, sort of, kind of... maybe not. :)

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I'm at the end but Larian's absolutely sincere depth of mechanical quality, I love the turn based combat, and fantastic writing makes for very compelling gameplay, not to mention the sound design, composition are exceptional and the art direction ranges from "ok, not my thing" to absolutely...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

No, I just said "a super modern 5e d&d based game". Where'd you'd get the traditional DnD tropes thing from? I'm saying BG3 is super new school D&D but I'm still enjoying the game because Larian did such a good job with it even if I don't love all the changes to FR or all of the content, I...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I was speaking with others, that line was obviously a satirical exaggeration, but hinted at direction, we got it and moved on from there if you read the rest of the posts. I am actually totally spent on this discussion, and don't have really more to contribute at this point. So no worries, I'm...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

It goes so hugely beyond the "silly, as in not any one thing is big deal" word changes, it's all of it in totality, the art, content, mechanics, lore or lack there of, all of contribute to wotc's lack of appeal for me. This was just "another thing", albeit a smaller one in the big pile of...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I've enjoyed them all on some level from OG late 70s as a kid all the way through 5e up to like 2-3 years ago. I loved 5e on test/launch it was our main game for a really long time. Actually we often still play 5e, just act as if it ended a couple years ago. I do admit, we gave 4e/Ebberon a...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

Of course its a purposely exaggerated example, but that is more of the vibe I'm getting these days. We've checked out some of latest adventures, even tried to use parts of them and it all has this very "samey" feel and style to them regardless of the setting. It just keep getting further and...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

And yeah a very modern d&d party of half bunny bards that look like cartoon characters within a game of none to little conflict resolution or action not my thing, as much as an action packed adventure Conan/Elric inspired Frazetta and classic Greyhawk are my thing. But didn't they super water...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

As one example, and just off the top of my head, I think any of the more sword and sorcery type elements, that might not appeal to as wide of the very current audience they are after. I'm not even sure if the earlier adventure paths would be acceptable as made new any more, like Tyranny of...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I do honestly believe they have restricted themselves creatively to their detriment, sure infinite is infinite, but in the d&d game space for me wotc's latest releases have not sparked inspiration and excitement for me like they used to. I'm finding the products consistently devoid of a lot of...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I think for sure wotc has backed themselves into a small corner, but they want to be there. The content they can explore is much more limited than just word swapping in my view. The caution and hesitation for risk of offending "someone" out there, is very evident, and in my opinion is leading to...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I don't know if others on this particular forum feel that the current wotc neo-5e d&d is awesome or lame, or somewhere in between. I think the aggressive changes over the last 2-3 years or so have lead to a vastly more boring, uninspiring and uninteresting version of d&d, I also feel the...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

And this is where I actually selfishly agree, if you can't be true to the expected source material please wait for an era where you can be. And this ties into my other discussion above about controlling the textual content of their licensing partners. They100% do and will exert that control.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I'm saying they can't take any risks creatively, even if they might actually pay off. They are extraordinarily risk adverse regardless of what sections of the audience might or might not want.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

Actually they have, the book art in question was a editorial error/overlook and as you said they caught huge grief because of it from a section of their audience. They can't take those risks, it's not allowed and the DS is way too over the top for the position wotc has taken. In another era, the...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

Agree, never gonna happen. They have positioned themselves in a way that they can not remove themselves from. Anything even remotely "risky" in the slightest way is a no go for them. Taking creative chances of any kind is off the table for wotc, for the very long foreseeable future.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

I am saying simply there are situations where wotc would maintain control of the language used in 3rd party licensed content beyond CC. So yes, that to me is relevant to the discussion of language and "wotc d&d". You could have an official d&d licensed product and wotc could prevent you from...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

No it's not, there are different license agreements for both of those entities. And say there is a book tie in to a game module, or something wotc would want more control over. How about a 3rd party campaign setting like the critical role Tal'Dorei Reborn setting, that for sure has a negotiated...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

Yeah many have just done it themselves, with varying degrees of success and consistency. Lot's of nice resources out there that will ultimately I believe have to make do for now, at least until we enter a new phase of "d&d" beyond this one.

It is what they are currently doing, could have also done if for Spelljammer and Planescape the same way, but didn't.
