    D&D General Single class party?

A scouting paladin even single classed is pretty easy to make with backgrounds and racial choices. I've also found that so long as everyone is on point what the game is about and the character feels right even when you eschew multiclassing a single well thought out "other" class won't be...

D&D 5E (2014) Odd things in the rules that bug you?

For a game that is eminently suited for low magic play at all levels there is a serious lack of non spell using options outside of fighter or rogue. An official optional no spells ranger with decent conclaves would be great and frankly so would more barbarian paths. Heck some kind of...

    Cleric Won't Heal?

That is a great description of 4E. I think its why my group never played it too.

    D&D General Single class party?

In 5E all Bard party needn't be a band or troupe of entertainers either. They could be explorers, archeologists and all sorts of things. Such a party could handle almost any problem though skill overlap might be an issue.

    D&D General Single class party?

Try Rogues. Player's naturally get into the idea of planning heists, robbery and other such nefarious activity alarmingly easily. My 2E game like this has at its peak 12 players for a few sessions which was far too many. A normal sized group or a smaller one works better and is amazing/...

    D&D General Single class party?

I love this kind of party. I ran two "all rogues." Epic 6 Pathfinder and 2E AD&D games though mutliclassing was allowed even for 2e humans and played in an all fighters (with 1 MU actually) game which was very Black Company and fun though far too short.

    Cleric Won't Heal?

I have to disagree with our host Morrus here. Clerics weren't healers in the very early editions and only had 1 healing spell if that in 0E and only that at second level In 5E they aren't aren't heal bots and so long as he keeps dishing the damage as well as everyone else, its fine. The...

World of Design: The Lost Art of Making Things Up

SNIP various Not really. Gamers are just as imaginative or unimaginative as they were in the decades ago when I started. In fact given the plethora of ready made adventures and supplements that have proliferated over the last 20 years and the number of DM's using only homebrew stuff out there...

    Pathfinder 1E Over-Buffing

Absolutely. If the bad guys can hear them than there will be consequences.

    Pathfinder 1E Over-Buffing

I've never seen issues with it but its because my players aren't huge on buff-spells. I think buffing so long as its not interrupted by noise or whatever is kind of baked into PF's 15 minute work day though so its fine as was scry/buff/teleport attacks in 3.5. Its just how the rules work and...

D&D 5E (2014) At what level does play become "high level"?

Wish there were more DM's like you out there and High level wasn't just theoretical or in my case some ironically GURPS

D&D 5E (2014) At what level does play become "high level"?

I've never been in a game where we got above eight level or so in any edition and I've played 1,2,3X and 5. Most DM's simply refuse to run higher level games or the interest peters out and we move onto something else. As for a reason for not running, they simply can't cope with higher magic...

    Modern Games (Cops and reality)

I run procedurals all the time and prefer to run them when I only have two players. However these are almost always cop or detective themed and we haven't run into any real world events that would effect the game. I also tend to avoid hot button political issues as my group is all ovber the...

The Horror! of a Game That Never Ends

Absolute truth. This is also something that DM's need to keep in mind, even younger ones. Its not 1981 and if the game isn't fun, its done. I can go home and replay Skyrim or the Witcher or whatever.

Do you consider learning a new game to be unpleasant work?

I think most supplemental game books are never used in any large measure. Everyone has a few favorites and the rest are just for reading and daydreaming about. This may have changed a bit with much of it being on-line though. I'm not exactly looped out of that but I game kind of old school with...

D&D 5E (2014) As a Player, why do you play in games you haven't bought into?

If this counts I will give nearly any game 3 sessions and if it doesn't click, I'll excuse myself and go do something else. I think this is enough to determine whether I will like it or not and a short enough time that I won't disrupt the game for other people who might enjoy it. Also buy in...

D&D General Why do you play Dungeons & Dragons?

D&D has a large installed player base, and since most people play it, I do too. My preferred systems, GURPS and Unisystem (Buffy, Angel All Flesh, etc) have less players or in the case of Unisystem are moribund for the most part so D&D its is. Also unlike previous editions which were OK, I like...

Do you consider learning a new game to be unpleasant work?

This was a great question. I voted Work simply because new rules typically aren't worth the time and effort to learn them. Yes they can be better at one thing or another but they are not, broadly better than the rules I already have. Some games have proven to be worth the effort if either...

RPG Evolution: Take Care of Your Players

SNIP some stuff Mental health matter and while gaming can serve to buffer the bad times but its not a substitute for help and anyone whose gaming gaming mates are needing help ought to be encouraged to get it. Sometimes this hobby can put someone on the path to heal. One of my guys we'll...
