D&D 5E (2014) Which subclasses dropped the ball and how did you fix them

On what planet is the Trickery domain "weak, limited, or useless"? Anyway ... Assassin Rogue: (1) At 3rd level, proficiency with disguise and poison kits also comes with free Expertise in those. (2) Add at 3rd level, proficiency with all martial weapons and can use Sneak Attack with any weapon...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

Except in literally the descriptions of the skills in the PHB. And a lot don't. To insinuate that Expertise in Survival would be entirely useless past a certain point is disingenuous. "Can." Not "must." Which literally every other class that can cast spells has. The Ranger isn't special here...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

The point is that a Rogue who wants to hone their "Ranger-like" skills can be better at them than the Ranger is. First of all, even at higher levels many creatures in the MM travel don't fly, swim, teleport or burrow. Second of all, I'm reading the Tracking section of the DMG right now...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

Without Expertise a Rogue will always be better at those. It makes it easier, but it doesn't really require it. And the fact that you have to introduce homebrew or include all the newer subclasses to make the Ranger anything approaching a capable unit doesn't scream to you that the PHB Ranger...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

I certainly wouldn't, but whatever floats your boat I guess ... Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play? Stealth is a pretty big part of exploration. So are Perception and Investigation. Survival helps when tracking, which is kind of what a Ranger is supposed to do. Expertise would...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

But unlike the other two classes that do, does not get Expertise. A Lv. 1 Paladin still has Lay on Hands, a Lv. 1 Barbarian still has 2 Rages/day, and a Lv. 1 Artificer actually gets its Spellcasting at the start, cantrips included, despite being a half-caster otherwise. On what planet does a...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

It wouldn't and it isn't. Rangers are notoriously weak and useless at Lv. 1, before they get their spells and Fighting Style. Who said anything about another subsystem? The Paladin and Artificer don't have entirely new subsystems. They just have actual class features at all levels. That's why...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

The problem is that Rangers are the only class where ribbon features are all they get at several levels. Those are the only reasons the Ranger is even at all functional, yes. But the weakness of all its other features holds it back, not only making it the weakest class arguably, but also...

D&D 5E (2014) Which version of the Ranger?

That's really not why people are complaining about the Ranger at all. People are complaining because it has a bunch of features that are either extremely situational or never useful at all, and are regardless extremely poorly designed. No other class fails in its design to such a degree, not...

D&D 5E (2014) My Response to the "Monk Sucks" thread

I mostly meant damage-wise, which is definitely true as they don't really pick up any damage abilities after 11 other than the incrementally scaling Martial Arts die. Those abilities are OK. Certainly better than what, say, the Ranger gets. But nothing that really jumps out, either. Clerics...

D&D 5E (2014) My Response to the "Monk Sucks" thread

At levels 1-4, without any ki they're still effectively dual-wielders, with the benefits of the TWF Fighting Style, without actually needing to dual-wield. And 1-4 is when dual-wielding is actually good.

D&D 5E (2014) My Response to the "Monk Sucks" thread

The thing is though they're fine at low levels and solid through Lv. 10. It's at 11+ that they start to fall off.

D&D 5E (2014) If all Rangers had an animal companion ...

The Class Features Variant article seemed to all but give away the intent that the animal friendship spell or Animal Handling skill were two ways any Ranger could get an animal to join them on adventures. But even disregarding that, I always felt all Rangers should have had a 2nd-level spell...

D&D 5E (2014) My Response to the "Monk Sucks" thread

No, they wouldn't. Nothing the Monk gets is as disgustingly useless as the Ranger's Favored Enemy, Natural Explorer, Primeval Awareness, and Hide in Plain Sight.

    D&D 5E (2014) Classes that Suck

Fixing the PDK is actually pretty simple. Switch its Lv. 3 and Lv. 10 around. Giving the PDK the ability to enable an ally's attack at Lv. 3 makes it pretty nice. And moving the healing ability to Lv. 10 is OK because that's about the level it starts to be worth much of anything.

D&D General The Hall of Suck: Worst Classes in D&D History (Spoiler Alert: Nothing from 5e)

Yes, BO9S classes were good at what they did. Which is why it got made in the first place. Clerics were still much stronger overall classes, mind you, but at least the BO9S classes could do one thing very, very well. On the other hand, instead of a Fighter (or Paladin) and a Cleric in the same...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cleric Tier Ratings

Two of the top sources of Cleric damage are Spiritual Weapon and Spirit Guardians. The former relies on WIS for the attack roll, and the latter on WIS for the saving throw DC. So, pretty important.

D&D General The Hall of Suck: Worst Classes in D&D History (Spoiler Alert: Nothing from 5e)

First off, counterspell is a thing. And even if the dispel gets past counterspell, it's still not guaranteed on a Cleric. Dispels worked off caster level of both dispeller and dispellee. An equal-level enemy spellcaster has a 50% chance of dispelling the Cleric. If the Cleric has multiple buffs...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cleric Tier Ratings

War Cleric is great the first 4 levels. Guided Strike + Inflict Wounds is as good a nova as any in those levels. Then level 5 comes, martial characters get Extra Attack, all Clerics get Spirit Guardians, and the War domain drops off like Wile E. Coyote chasing the Roadrunner.
