    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

OK, let's say I don't want to cast Conjure Minor Elementals on the off-chance they might be wasted. (Which rarely happens in my experience, usually I have a pretty good idea of when to cast it and except combat, but that's neither here nor there.) That's fine, I have the best spell list in the...

Or those elementals can actually run into a battle and make it trivial.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

A Paladin has just as much of a chance of wasting a spell slot when it smites for overkill damage. Arguably far moreso.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

They won't be spread out over 24. They'll be spread out over 16, since 8 of those hours every day are from a long rest. The chances of a "wasted slot" are thus much less than you are claiming. Plus, let's be real, it's usually very easy to anticipate when a combat encounter is going to happen.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

If you're in any battle against more than one big enemy, and especially if those enemies stay at range, the Paladin isn't doing a thing.

D&D 5E (2024) The Great Nerf to High Level Martials: The New Grapple Rules

So why single out grappling characters, and not spellcasters whose spell lists are all loaded with the kind of things that bypass all of the above?
  7. Gladius Legis

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

The Wizard is a stronger class than the Paladin. That is the point.
  8. Gladius Legis

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

I didn't. A Wizard who cast it before hand already has 8 creatures at the start of combat to instantly fill the battlefield with. The point is that it's utterly trivial for a Wizard to outshine any Paladin.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

Did YOU notice that it lasts 1 hour? Do you realize how trivially a Wizard can boost their chances to succeed at concentration saves, or make it so attacks miss and they don't have to make them to begin with?
  10. Gladius Legis

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

The Wizard really doesn't have to try hard to outshine a Paladin. Cast Hypnotic Pattern and shut a whole encounter down. Done. Cast Conjure Minor Elementals and instantly fill the battlefield with more obstacles and rack up damage well beyond what a Paladin's smite adds. Done. Cast Animate...

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

In my experience, if the wizard isn't outshining the paladin, the wizard player is not good at playing their class.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

No, this statement is laughable. They weren't even one of the most powerful in 2014. Every full caster was better. They were just the best non-full caster, which is like winning junior varsity.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

If they require a bonus action you can't use them with a reaction attack. The weapon masteries are the only reason they're not straight-up 2014 Monk tier.
  14. Gladius Legis

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

OK, so I either take PAM or GWM and just have a bonus action that's better than anything smite can do, or I ignore those feats and intentionally gimp the character just so it can actually be a Paladin. Some choice there.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

Action juggling could be worked around in a lot of cases by prebuffing.
  16. Gladius Legis

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

I playtested it, too, and the class just felt bad to play. It was by far the most unpleasant experience I have ever had in 5e in any form, and I've played a 2014 Four Elements Monk. I was juggling bonus actions too many times, and at no point did a smite ever feel like an option at all. Simply...

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

If that was all that happened to its smite it'd be fine. The fact that it also takes a bonus action OTOH murders the class.
  18. Gladius Legis

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

It's not getting a republish in Unearthed Arcana, which means WOTC considered the latest version fit for print. That is not a good thing in the Paladin's case. It's easily the weakest class for 2024.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wow, 5.5e characters are STRONG!

Unless you're a Paladin. They suck in 2024.

Final Fantasy XVI should be nowhere near a top-10 anything list. It's not even top 10 in its own series.
