If you all are BRAND NEW to table top rpg's ... first, welcome! And second, definitely get the Starter set and run the adventure included (after having read it) using either the pre generated characters, or using the free basic rules PDF on WotC's site ... even though 5e is more streamlined...

I would do the same as I did with my Pathfinder core rules, which is a first printing: just mark up the book as I go. No need to replace the book unless it's falling apart.

At my table, I allow 4d6 drop lowest, but you can roll 6 arrays and take the one you like the most./ The only thing I don't allow is borrowing stats from one array to another.

This extended rest talk is tickling the back of my grey matter ... I seem to remember the healing in ICE's LotR game being similar ... and hating that, too! :) While not a fan of the insta-heal, I want the story to move along as much as my players do, and enforcing a healing mechanic like this...
