    D&D 5E (2014) 5e .

How does a wizard not have 50 gp for a gem at 1st level? What else are they sending their starting gold on? Armour? Weapons?

D&D 5E (2014) Does Eberron need to be high fantasy?

Well this seems to be in line with 5th ed. You will note that Rise of Tiamat, which starts PCs at around 8th level, states that NPCs regard the PCs as powerful heroes known up and down the Sword Coast and that the powerful factions come to rely on them as the only ones capable of solving the...

D&D 5E (2014) Decoupling [healing + resource recovery] from 'resting'

Meh. I think the fact that there are already clunky metagame aspects of the rules present doesn't argue for more of them. In fact, IMO it argues for fewer of them. I think you really just need to get to the head of the problem, which is that you don't want the frequency of resting entirely in...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Conan in 5e?

I'd give Conan Barbarian 2 (enough to reflect his heritage, his ability to fight unarmoured, and his preternatural awareness. Reckless Attack can also simulate some of his fights.). Then Rogue 2....to reflect his acknowledged thiefy-ness and his mobility in combat (Cunning Action). The rest...

    D&D 5E (2014) SCAG Half-Elf Variant

I like the post where it said it slipped through editing. Editing? That's the best joke of the new year. There is no way something like that should "slip through editing." WOTC's editing of 3e became, at the end when they were rushing through product to prop up their sales, a bad joke. So...

    D&D 5E (2014) In-combat reactions

I feel issues of morale should be entirely in the hands of the DM. To be a bit blunt, if you can't handle deciding when and how the enemies react to PC success, then you shouldn't be a DM.

    D&D 5E (2014) December Survey is Up

Exactly! In the DMG in 3.0 PrC were SPECIFICALLY reserved for the DM to use for NPCs to build interesting villains and the like. They were not intended for players. But players started using them and WOTC saw dollar signs and unleashed the hounds.

    D&D 5E (2014) Finally switching my campaign from 4th to 5th Edition.

Take a look at the starter adventure Lost Mines of Phandelver. Without giving spoilers, the first episode and the Castle episode both follow the guidelines in the DMG pretty well. Both of these areas have potential consequences for parties that retreat and return (even for an hour), even if...

    D&D 5E (2014) Experience with a bladesinger?

I wonder if people are forgetting that both multiclassing and feats are optional rules? If you do not one or both, does that change the utility of the Bladesinger?

D&D 5E (2014) Phandelver to Tyranny of Dragons?

[SPOILERS]: I took my 6 PCs from LMoP to HotDQ straight away. They were 4th level when finished with LMoP and I included a note in the dragon cultist encounter in Thundertree that was from Rezmir to Favric asking him to attept to gain allegiance with the green dragon and then report to cult...

D&D 5E (2014) Mapping Software Input [What's in your wallet?]

Autorealms is free to use, simple, and makes serviceable maps. I highly recommend taking a look at it because it is free. None of the maps you make in AR will win awards, but as you can see it is highly functional for a variety of gaming needs.

5e combat system too simple / boring?

Let me try to rephrase what you are saying: Me: I try to play my NPCs and monsters as if they are not cardboard props for my PCs and try to have them react intelligently. That results in a high degree of non-lethality and not attacking downed PCs usually. You: I want to kill my PCs and so I am...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

I use the same rule I used in my 3.5 campaign. It's called The Touch of Mergurr (Mergurr is my world's God of Death). Every time you come back from the dead, your soul becomes more and more desirous to spend its eternity in the afterlife, and you gain 1 point in Touch of Mergurr. In order to...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

And even if you die...so what? Revivify is a 3rd level spell and coming back from death now doesn't even cost you a level...just gold and we all know there is almost nothing to spend money on in 5th edition. Aside from TPKs, after 4th level death is absolutely meaningless in 5th edition.

5e combat system too simple / boring?

There is almost no reason to attack downed PCs unless they keep getting up again. Remember, most NPCs and monsters have their own lives and are not willing to sacrifice their own to take out a foe. Even hungry creatures tend to desire to eat a meal in peace. As well, a captured enemy is far more...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

This is so false I am taken aback. Than in ANY prior edition? Really? Original D&D. Magic-User. 1st level. Roll a d4. Did you roll a 1? Do you have a Con less than 15? Welcome to 1 hp and you DIE if you lose it. Thanks for playing. Come again. As I recall, even in 1st edition you died easier...
