    D&D 5E (2014) Is Dying really hard?

The falling thing has always been a problem with D&D and its hit points, in all editions. One way to make PCs less blase about falling at higher levels while not making falls insta-death is to introduce the idea of critical damage on a fall. On a roll of 20 the damage is doubled. Or maybe a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Dying really hard?

Ok. I'll grant you the "wantonly" part was assuming malicious DM intent. I should have worded it as I did in the second quote of mine you presented, which simply assumes bad judgment. I agree it was not subtext. Thanks for pointing it out.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Dying really hard?

Where did I assume you have malicious intentions? I made a comment on predators. That's all. Subtext much? As far as "better" vs "preferences", de facto.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Dying really hard?

That's fine, but those zombies do not have intelligence scores or exhibit intelligence equal to higher order mammals. You can run your world any way you like, but the text in the MM and the stats do not argue for that interpretation.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Dying really hard?

I didn't miss your point at all, but apparently, you missed mine. I was only excluding zombies because, with no real life analogues, there is no way anyone can actually comment authoritatively on their feeding habits. Since all we have to go on are real life examples, I gave them. It is not a...

D&D 5E (2014) DMing "Out of the Abyss"

I ran OOTA and can give you the following advice: 1) The adventure relies way too heavily on random encounters. The travelling time spent in the adventure is really beyond belief. Even if you've read the adventure, you probably still have no idea just how long the travel times are. My groups...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Dying really hard?

The way to somewhat alleviate the whack-a-mole situation is to introduce some deleterious or potentially deleterious effect from dropping to 0 hp (aside from being unconscious). I have my PCs roll on a softened version of the critical damage chart from the DMG. It causes PCs to not be so blase...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Dying really hard?

I cannot speak to zombies, but most real life predators will not attempt to chow down on a meal while being threatened or attacked. Predators have to eat meals every day and taking wounds while eating is a good way to make it your last meal. In short, a predator is going to either try to flee...

    D&D 5E (2014) Blade Ward cantrip

Not if they are spotted. I'd still take the True Strike. It doesn't cost anything to cast pre-battle.

    D&D 5E (2014) Blade Ward cantrip

Regarding True Strike, it seems to me the cantrip is very useful as an opener when the caster has set up an ambush. All of the high elf scouts in my campaign have it and it makes them truly dangerous if they are hiding in the forest in an ambuscade. At low level combat, gaining advantage on a...

D&D 5E (2014) [DM problem] Is the group I am leading too strong? Is the 5E system unbalanced?

No one is saying don't use any of them. But I have seen far too many people on these boards giving out way too many of them way too soon. Clearly, these people are coming from a 3.5 mindset. But all you have to do is take a look at the magic distribution in the published adventures and APs and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Recommend a 5e AP

SPOILERS My opinion on the APs (you only asked about APs, so I am not commenting on LMoP or TftYP): HotDQ and RoT: Very linear. Lots of mistakes on maps and texts. Some very illogical plot holes (in fact, the entire concept of HotDQ doesn't make geographical sense!). The final encounter in RoT...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the perfect Fighter/Barbarian multi-class balance?

I am playing a barbarian (battlerager) with fighter levels. I will end up Champion 4/Battlerager 16. I initially chose fighter to be able to afford spiked armour, since I was not sure the campaign would let me buy some once it started, and barbarians do not start with enough gold to purchase...

D&D 5E (2014) Dungeon Length: How long does it take?

Living Greyhawk was designed for 4 hour sessions at gaming conventions, and the PCs all had premade characters, so it was basically right into the scenario. Pretty much like clockwork, these scenarios had 3 "encounters", usually creatures but sometimes major traps or puzzles. Counting...

D&D 5E (2014) [DM problem] Is the group I am leading too strong? Is the 5E system unbalanced?

POTA SPOILERS: Several things (some already iterated above, but I am reiterating them). First, PoTA is generally too easy as written IMO. I played through it and have read it through afterwards. There is not a lot of magic or spell power thrown at the PCs, and this makes a barbarian (I played...

Thanks. That's where I found it!

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss: number of encounters per day in the Underdark?

The wandering portions of OOTA are the weakest part of the adventure...and it is a horribly weak part. I don't think you have any conception yet how much wandering there is in that adventure. I didn't until I got to the later parts where the PCs are taking multiple 60 day long journeys! It is an...

Yes. I have. They do not.

    Knowledge Arcana issue?

Does anyone have copies of the online magazine Knowledge Arcana, put out by WOTC back in around 2004? I am asking because I wrote an article for issue #2 and I'd like a copy of it (my copy died on an old computer). I can't find the magazine anywhere on the internet.

D&D 5E (2014) Why does WotC put obviously bad or illogical elements in their adventures?

Anyone who has read he HotDQ and RoT APs knows that logic flies right out of the window with these things. No one has yet explained why the gold and treasure in HotDQ travels hundreds of miles north along the coast to get to a place where a portal opens up to get to a place where a cloud giant...
