    Barbarian - Background/Theme or Class?

Would you like to see the barbarian in 5E handled as a class, or would you like the theme of the barbarian stripped down into a theme and class? There's a number of points for each side. As a background, you could have barbarian fighters, rogues, sorcerers, druids and whatever class you felt...

What defines a theme vs a class vs a background?

A theme ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it. Tain't What You Do - Jimmy Lunceford - YouTube Your class is what you do. Your theme is how you do it. Your background is why you do it.

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

Paladins need some sort of mechanical niche. Now that they're not going to be LG only, I don't think smite/detect evil is going to cut it. Having the Paladin required to swear some sort of oath, regardless of his alignment or deity, could be pretty cool. The oaths could range from vanquishing...

Reasons to have paladins and rangers as classes

I agree. I'd like to be able to make a ranger or a paladin with various background and theme options.

    Ranger Design Goals

I am happy that there is no mention of spellcasting.

Separating Attack and Utility Spell Slots

I think that most utility spells should be rituals. By utility spell, I mean a spell that won't be of any use in 95% of combat, like Comprehend Languages and Alarm. Spells like Charm Person and Jump are a different matter, as they can help in combat indirectly, even if they offer utility out...

    Cleric-y Fighters (or Fighter-y Clerics)

I agree with CleverNickName. What a level 1 fighter has over a level 1 cleric with the same stats and equipment are a few more hit points and +2 to his damage rolls. That's it. It might change at higher levels, but I haven't played that far. I don't think that's enough to distinguish the...

Playtest - Disappearances in the Village

My group had another session tonight and a new player joined in. We were at six players so the group decided that a fun way to implement a new character was to have the new player play as the cocky archer the party met in the last session. We statted him as a human fighter with the commoner...

Should there be special rules for subduing dragons?

Yes, but only for a Pokémon module.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Art Column: June! And July!

I like the Track 1 owlbear. It's lean, mean and bulky. It looks like it packs a punch but can still move and attack swiftly. I can also envision it moving, which is always a plus.

    6-5 Rule of Three

I like paladins as a base class. I like the guideline they give us for advantage/disadvantage. I don't like the human +1 to all ability scores. So every human on average is as intelligent as a high elf and as stout as a dwarf? No sir. It sort of makes me feel as if all other races are...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

I think it's alright. There should be some sort of feat you should be able to take where you never take damage on a miss, though.

D&D 5E (2014) The cover of the 5E PHB: What I'd like to see

Two or three rag tag adventurers standing in front of an opened treasure chest in a dungeon, their overjoyed faces lit up by the reflection of the gold. Unbeknownst to them, the owner of the treasure, a red dragon, is standing right behind them and does not look too happy. How the scenario...

D&D 5E (2014) How should combat maneuvers be handled in Next?

As opposed rolls. I don't want CMB and I don't want CMD. Rolling a Strength vs Strength check when attempting a bull rush or a Charisma vs Wisdom check when attempting to feint is simple and efficient. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you play with "casual" gamers, and how should D&D Next accomodate their needs?

I think that new players should be treated as people that are actually trying to get into the game. It should be expected that they're willing to go the extra mile to learn some rules if they're playing D&D in the first place. Stay clear of any unnecessary rules, but don't trim down on useful...

    Does race matter enough?

I think race matters more now than in most previous editions. Aside from the traits listed on the character sheet, there are also "hidden traits" that the devs have mentioned, such as halflings getting more damage with slings and dwarves getting more damage with hammers and axes. I'm all for...

    How to stop runners?

Ray of Frost! Seriously though, I think that fighters should get opportunity attacks as part of their natural class progression even if other classes don't. It would give them a pretty valuable niche in making their enemies think twice before running away!

Playtest - Disappearances in the Village

I didn't take anything from the module actually. I just took monsters from the bestiary and put them together to form what I thought was a fair challenge, and the out of combat DCs were set using the guidelines in the DM guide. I'm glad you guys liked the report, I'll be sure to post the...

Playtest - Disappearances in the Village

My group finally managed to find some time to run a playtest of the rules. There were five players plus me as the DM and I handed each character sheet out randomly. The players had not read the rules, but they were familiar with the basics and after around 5-10 minutes of reading their sheets...
