Couldn't disagree more, Vader was a solider following the emperors wishes for a long time. He didn't kill indiscriminately. He ran a tight ship. Did he do chaotic things now and then, sure.

30 years ago, nobody was enforcing roleplay, puzzles were solved by the players and it was fun and worked just fine. I don't think we needed more "rolls and checks" to make it funner. Sometimes a DM might mess up a puzzle, making it too obscure so hints were dropped.

Why would you only consider a game with a numeric charisma. You feel like you must have a number to roleplay to?

Right, I like the concept of role, I get how its useful, but taking an iconic monster from 1e like a Marilith demon and then calling it a "skirmisher" screams wrong to me. The creature is too unique/important for that. Whats a Balrog, (I mean Balor) well he is just a brute. Describe Smaug...

I have mixed feelings on the roles. I think its fine when it makes sense. But I feel like they painted themselves into a corner by needing to give everything a role e.g. Sphinx is an Elite Soldier? Marilith is a Skirmisher? Its just weird seeing mass combat roles applied.
