Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

No, they know what they rolled and hear me state a result. If their roll was good they can weight on the side that they succeeded and what I said is correct. But it might not. Knowing the state of another's thoughts can be a skill but seems a bit overpowering to make it an absolute science. YMMV

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

When I DM I have the following method... PC Insight equal to or less than NPC Deception = Roll 1d6, on even "You're pretty sure they're not telling the truth about something", on odd "You're pretty sure they're telling you the truth". PC Insight beats NPC Deception = Roll 1d6 for fun. "You're...

    Your most used accessories?

I use these for character sheet holders along with a wet-erase pen. They're vertical sign holders (non free standing) made of clear, solid lexan. Keeps sheets clean and (more or less) immune to table spills.

[5e] Rakshasas cannot be counterspelled (mostly)? Is that how you would play it

Crawford posted something quite a while ago that Counterspell targets the caster, not the spell. You could still Counterspell if using a 6th level or greater slot, however.

Is using a familiar in combat to grant advantage a common tactic?

Happens all the time. As a DM I have no problem targetting Familiars and including them in AoE spell targets if the wizard hasn't specifically said they're somewhere safe (like that handy interdimensional space they can hang in).

D&D 5E (2014) How Do You Learn How To Design A High Level Adventure?

Make it hard. Look it over. Then make it harder, because PCs be PCs.

The Goldilocks Poll: How Magic is 5e?

Magic seemed a heck of a lot more high magic in 2nd and 3rd edition, to me. There were no concentration limits, lots of extra spell slots from super high stats, no attunement worries and combats were dominated by buffs, debuffs and high-damage spells. 5e is a pale shadow of that apex.

    Tormenting Demons

I'm not a fan of torture in the games I run. I rarely allow it to work the way the PCs want it to. Instead the victim tells the PCs what they want to hear. Then the PCs cast something like Detect Thoughts to see if they were told the truth and I let them know they could of done that to begin...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the point of gold?

When were magic stores closed? If you want magic stores put them into your game.

[AL] Are Season 8's New Rules an Improvement?

Yep. Fuzzy isn't all bad, but can effect someone's decision to use non-combat xp awards if they think they'll get 'official' criticism for doing so. Since APs are all fuzzy; no harm, no foul in awarding them as you decide as a DM. If you think the party was engaged in the game, having fun...

[AL] Are Season 8's New Rules an Improvement?

I've heard this before. The truth is that it is simpler for a DM to feel justified in providing ascribed xp for defeating monsters than saying they earned it via other methods. Therefore they know they are good if they give the xp for combat but might feel less inclined to provide the...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's the point of gold?

I have two AL PCs who, in total, spent over 60k GP for a whole slew of potions and 1st-5th level scrolls. Gold is a superpower of its' own if you use it right.

[AL] Are Season 8's New Rules an Improvement?

I have to agree with this. Moving from xp to advancement points is a good thing for AL. I think it's a powerful tool in enabling the DM and players to explore many kinds of resolutions to a scenario beyond fighting.

[AL] Are Season 8's New Rules an Improvement?

Treasure rules in AL and open play in general has always been problematic. I don't think the Season 8 changes has been much of an improvement. The concept of riches and rewards are so abstracted now that it feels like treasure has just become set dressing.

Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?

It's their world. Players are visiting it, and their characters effect it, but at the end of the day it's the DM that brings it to life.

Is Polymorph responsible for the lack of high CR beasts?

A significant percentage of high CR Beasts are druids, anyway.

Would you play a D&D campaign without leveling?

No. But I'd consider a much longer time between leveling that default 5e.
