Option 2 sounds the best. Not only does it provide the better roleplaying oppertunities, but it limits the potential casaulties until they figure out their situation.

When your calculating the CR for a creature with a fractional CR value and adding +1 to the CR, are you adding a solid +1 to the CR or +1 CR level, taking it to the next fractional level ? Does CR 1/4 +1 = 1(Rounded down from 1.25) or 1/2 ?
