What is the essence of 4E?

That strikes me as an important example of edition differences. 4E pushes players towards intentional pursuit of synergy. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, could be a pivot point between love for 4E and hatred for 4E. Remember that scene in Lord of the Rings, in which Pippin and Merry...

What is the essence of 4E?

Indeed. As a hater, here's my summary: if you want to play World of Warcraft, but you don't have a computer, then 4E D&D is the closest approximation. If you want to play Magic the Gathering, but all your friends would rather play a TRPG, then 4E D&D is the compromise.

What if there were no attacks of opportunity?

If, in your setting, people only ever charge at each other, then you don't need AoO. If anyone ever turns and runs away, then either you want fleeing to reliably result in successfully ending contact, which is very different from real life; or you will want some version of AoO.

    Super Simple Armor

Do you want cost to matter? Are there PCs or NPCs, in the setting, who *would* wear heavier armor, if they could acquire it?

Where have your favorite campaign ideas come from?

I ran Adventurers League for a while, lots of short adventures in and around the city of Phlan, many of them involving dragons, with the cult of Tiamat in the background. Then I recruited some players from the AL into a home game, and wrote stories based on these questions: what if most of the...

Where Do They Get Their Money, Part One

Your thread title says money. Your first post is about coinage. Are you familiar with the distinctions between money and currency, and between currency and coinage?

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e completely nerfed charm - for YOU, anyway

Prudent. I suspect that *challenging* moderation decisions in-thread is the form of discussion most likely to provoke negative response, but discussions with a tone of respectful approval are probably safer in Meta than in-thread, lest misunderstandings or dog-pile ensue. Yes. Friends does the...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e completely nerfed charm - for YOU, anyway

Oh, so it is. Post #60 was in early 2016, post #61 was recent (mid-2018). Still, Morlock's participation ended in 2016 and there were several posts afterwards, before the thread went dormant. I wonder if Morlock was satisfied with the extent to which other people contributed to the advancement...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e completely nerfed charm - for YOU, anyway

It's a first-level spell. There should be a more powerful enchantment spell, at a higher level. Such as a 2nd level "Suggestion" spell, for example. How about that? I find it interesting that the person who initially expressed such interest in stronger PC-usable influence magic, has dropped...

    Mage about town...

I ran a druid PC named Agath, whose second or third adventure arc was about helping a barbarian army conquer a city ruled by demon-worshippers. There were side adventures recruiting allies, prep raids on the city's water supply, etc., and eventually the Big Battle. When the dust settled, all of...

    D&D 5E (2014) magic items for druid?

How many pillars does your game include? I played a moon druid who had a helm of telepathy. Never used it *in combat*. Used it a LOT for exploration and interaction. Casting a spell before wildshaping is often useful. Thus, any magic item which allows more spellcasting, such as a ring of spell...

    Your Suspension of Disbelief: SHATTERED!

Indeed, Nevvur objects specifically to the *sudden* acquisition of a British accent. Not that a Guernsey accent has quite the charming lilt of Mancunian or Scouse... ah, never mind. Are there passages from USA mass media, which people in Britain quote, with a corresponding accent shift? Or do...

    Your Suspension of Disbelief: SHATTERED!

You've named yet another thing I find jarring in standard D&D: "balancing" higher tech levels with lower tech levels, in order to balance a stereotypical Level X barbarian with a stereotypical Level X samurai with a stereotypical Level X knight. When an army of unarmored barbarians, fighting as...

    Your Suspension of Disbelief: SHATTERED!

Okay, I'm imagining Conan with a halberd, with a pile of foes at his feet. The foes look awfully stupid, because dead people lose their wits. Wait, when you said "stupid", did you mean "not conforming to prevailing stereotypes"? There were people in the 1940s who thought that jet airplanes...

    Your Suspension of Disbelief: SHATTERED!

On one hand, the extent of your willingness is up to you. On another hand, I see room for shades of nuance. In 5E, casting a spell is often the action with the *most* consistent and predictable outcome. If you shoot arrows, they'll follow Newtonian principles of motion, and other factors such...

    Your Suspension of Disbelief: SHATTERED!

On one hand, you were asked what shatters it for you, and that's your answer. On another hand, I've seen dual-wielding in SCA combat, including a guy who was very effective with a pair of "swords" and in a real fight I suspect he'd be lethal with a baseball bat in each hand. For me, the...

    Your Suspension of Disbelief: SHATTERED!

The degree to which the rules for PC spellcasting are consistent and predictable, should match the degree to which PCs understand magic as consistent and predictable. On one hand, there is a fictional setting, in which there is a University which teaches students how to do magic, and lesson 1...

    Your Suspension of Disbelief: SHATTERED!

Hey, a Princess Bride reference, in content-relevant context. Is that better than a Monty Python reference? There are video games in which you can go to the Big Door, and if you open it, the High Priest is about to make the Great Sacrifice; but if instead you walk away and do other stuff for an...

    Your Suspension of Disbelief: SHATTERED!

The earliest occasion I can recall: back in the 1980s, playing The Fantasy Trip. Our PCs are advancing through a forest or jungle. An enemy patrol shows up. Instead of charging headlong at them, we initially fall back from column into line, so when they charge at us, they end up with relatively...

    D&D 5E (2014) Emporium Items

Masterwork weapons. My home brew version: the stats in the PHB describe iron weapons. Weapons with steel edges and/or points do +1 damage. A weapon custom-made for a specific individual, optimized for heft and balance, gives that individual +1 to hit. Nobles tend to have steel weapons...
