D&D 5E (2014) Difference between critical hits and automatic hits.

Well, I can't win them all, I suppose. Speaking of which, the kids really enjoyed the Swiss ski trip from "Uncle" Talath. Thaumaturge.

    D&D 5E (2014) On Falling

Of course, if you happen to forget, there is always this nifty handbook: Fire and Brimstone. The rules are OGL and compatible with any system. Here's a sneak peak: But there are multiple examples of play to help DMs get a feel for the nuances. Thaumaturge.

    D&D 5E (2014) So who is playing 5E?

I'm DMing HotDQ, which started last night and was a roaring success. I'm DMing a convert on the fly version of Ruins of Undermountin, which we've delved into a couple of times and enjoyed. And I'm starting a LMoP google hangouts table with my in-laws (3 couples, husbands and wives). I...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone who got an mm at Gencon want to offer up spoilers to us?

In my conversion of Ruins of Undermountain I'm running I unleashed one of these on the party. So good. For me. CR 2. Very low AC. DC 15 to spot one that hasn't moved. Good amount of hitpoints. If you walk into one without seeing it (/cackle) your save to avoid being eaten is at disadvantage...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen - a solid D effort.

Not true. Please see my previous post where I quoted the adventure. It talks about the dragon killing the PCs, which is not quite "total plot immunity". The dragon can, and will, kill foolhardy PCs. It says so. In the adventure. Thaumaturge.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen - a solid D effort.

:uhoh: Um... I wouldn't note that because I didn't really read the OP. I kinda skimmed and then jumped in. Fortunately, I was replying to someone else's comments. :) I can see what you're saying. For me the dragon's motivations are spelled out clearly enough that him leaving after...

So then it doesn't appear to be a problem. Groups that need a level of impermanence (Encounters) are making a trade. They get less verisimilitude in exchange for a game that meets at a time/place convenient for them. Like you said, everyone else can adapt to the situation on the ground, so to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Clay Golem HP Drain

Are there piñatas at the fountain? If so, would you say there are many piñatas? Thaumaturge.

If that's the way you'd play it as a DM, then I can't argue with you. Me? I'd take into account how much other assistance the players had offered. If they helped but were just gassed when the dragon attacked, Nighthill would be thankful and understanding for their other support. If they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Clay Golem HP Drain

A minor note: I've looked through the Monster Manual a number of times. I don't think cold iron weapons are needed for any of the monsters in it. I've looked specifically for cold iron, and I didn't see it ever. So a silver and an adamantine weapon seems to be all a character needs. And one...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen - a solid D effort.

If you can die before saving in a video game intro, then yes. It's like that. I think the purpose of the encounter is to be a tense "we are so out of our league" moment. But the PCs can die. Their actions count. If they ignore it, the dragon kills a bunch of people and then gets bored. If they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen - a solid D effort.

I've seen the dragon combat misconstrued (in my opinion) a number of times. My take on the dragon, as I have stated before, is that he is like any of us dutifully attending a company picnic. The PCs landing a crit or a little bit of damage is like one of us (at said picnic) sitting on an...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone who got an mm at Gencon want to offer up spoilers to us?

"Ancient beings with origins in the Feywild, hags are cankers on the mortal world." They are described at various points as: magical, arrogant, immortal, and wicked. They reproduce by snatching babies, eating them, and giving birth to new hags. They will make bargains with mortals, but beware...
