    D&D 5E (2014) A different take on Alignment

Making up hypothetical “identical” personalities that act differently is a really “interesting” take. It’s almost as if people who act differently do NOT share personality traits. Stunning.

    D&D 5E (2014) A different take on Alignment

I mean... I’d be embarrassed if I had to stretch my arguments so far in a weird defense of alignments usefulness. It’s useless now. Ideals, bonds, flaws and personality traits are vastly superior and allow for nuanced characters. Alignment is vestigial.

    D&D 5E (2014) Goldilocks Poll: Counterspell

It hasn’t come up very often but I”ve allowed “thematic” counters. Want to cast ice storm to counteract the incoming fireball? Sure!

    D&D 5E (2014) Goldilocks Poll: Counterspell

In some instances I have provide the character with a limited time frame that dispel magic works. “You’ve cast the spell and the wall of flame vanishes... but you can feel the power of the enchantment growing rapidly... you don’t have much time before the fire returns...” Which is usually met...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you allow a spell to be identified before counterspelling?

I might let them know the power level of the spell? Maybe they can feel the arcane energies are more powerful than a standard counter spell so the player can make a call about wether or not they want to upcast or take a chance on counter spell failing. But I DEFINITELY would NOT roll arcana...

D&D 4E How to speed up combat?

I can’t speak specifically for 4e but a couple suggestions based on your post... Don’t do morale checks but DO morale. Have NPCs break in whichever way you feel best at any time you think appropriate. Don’t bother rolling a die and consulting the chart. Does the goblin stand firm in the face of...

    D&D 5E (2014) RIP alignment

And... shockingly... you CAN in fact have massive battles between good and evil WITHOUT alignment.

    D&D 5E (2014) RIP alignment

5e passively made alignment irrelevant by changing the detect and protection from evil/good spells. I always give my characters an alignment out of habit as a vague guidepost but my traits/flaws/bonds/ideals all play more into whoever the character is and are much more useful.

    D&D 5E (2014) RIP alignment

RE: D&Ds identity. I’m pretty sure alignment is really far down the list of things that make up the identity of D&D.

    D&D 5E (2014) RIP alignment

Alignment has been vestigial for decades. Shrug.
