How much back story do you allow/expect at the start of the game?

I am in the middle of doing a long backstory of my character but I have bullet pointed the important parts of the story for the DM and would not expect them to read as they tend to have enough going on already (although I would appreciate it if they did). I mostly started writing because my...

D&D 5E (2014) Please Help me Keep up with my friends!

Honestly if you can't beat them join them. By this I mean instead of out performing them, make your allies even more powerful and the battle master can do this in various ways. Manoeuvring attack for example could move the bugbear rogue in a better position for the next attack OR help them get...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Grappler's Manual (2.0) - Grappling in 5th Edition

Ditto. I am making a half-orc with the mounted combatant feat (to attack against most creatures with advantage increasing the chances of crits which is great for the Half-orcs savage attacker trait) and possibly the polearm feat. Hit and mark creatures with reach, ride off if needs be. If I want...

D&D 5E (2014) [Xanathar's Guide] What is your first PC you're gonna make?

Depending on its final form maybe a half orc cavalier with a polearm. I would take the mounted combatant feat to keep the mount alive and advantage against most things from a distance with polearm. I would take the polearm master feat and fighting style- tunnel fighter for all the advantage...

D&D 5E (2014) What class do you think you want to play but never actually play?

Monk, just feels out of place in setting

    D&D 5E (2014) Ultimate Good Guy

Ah okay fair enough, honestly if you do not intend to put a lot of levels/start as paladin I would perhaps scrap paladin completly or just goto level 2 for divine smite. Okay ill just make a build here of a style I think would be cool or at least make you understand what you do not want. I will...

"We Demand Service!": Players Expecting NPC Handouts

I had a cleric called Dr Med (not real name, forgotten his real name (long story)) and he charged the party for his healing services. I made a insurance type system, that gave certain party members priority and so on and he had packages to be a personal physician if people paid enough gold...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ultimate Good Guy

I kinda of get you in terms of what you are designing, but I think you could achieve it with a simple class dip instead of 3 classes. Also not sure why you would see warlock as the type that calls good guy, typically I see them as possibly morally ambiguous as they are making deals with higher...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ultimate Good Guy

I can recommend feats on what you said, he sounds like a shield kind of man (as in the equipment AND the spell). For feats the 3 that come to mind are sentinel, shield master and war caster (not saying to have all 3, just pick around your focus). -Sentinel would allow you to get a extra hit...

    D&D 5E (2014) New DM Help

I can feel your pain on this one. Honestly there is way too much min maxing from the sound of it, what even is the multiclass character at this point? Is there a reason she is such a mix? What is in her story/ progression to justify this build? One rule I have is for multiclassing as DM is it...

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

Yeah I know that feeling, although I pull off druid since I find it easier to act as eccentric old men for some reason. For me it's paladin and monk, I wish I could pull off monk but it never feels natural and a bit forced.

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

Not really, meant it as it was said. Not sure why people are taking this as if I am saying anyone who likes the paladin is wrong when I have admitted its my own "problem" if it can be called such a thing. I just know of other people who feel the same way. If someone was to play one in my group I...

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

Yeah I do get your point. I suppose it is kind of like a sci fi fan hating star wars and preferring things such as blade runner, they are the same genre but completely different in approach/feeling. I think the problem I may have with paladin is that once you give them a personality/ goal that...

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

I wasn't really complaining, said from the beginning it was just a personal opinion. Paladins just don't appeal to me regardless of how they are presented.

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

Sorry, I just find them boring as a concept (although oath of the ancients is step in the right direction). Would a party animal really be able to make an oath strong enough to be selected as one of the privileged few that is the paladin? If they could the oath would be along the lines of "I...

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin: Why Are They Often Considered Highly Powerful?

People have pretty much pointed out why the paladin is so good. The only flaw I can think of regarding the paladin is not even a flaw and more of a personal preference; they are really boring characters. Yes, I am sure many people will say "oh my paladin was really unique in terms of...

D&D 5E (2014) Attack of the Clones: Simulacrum

Have not read the whole thread but dealing with one simulacrum I recommend dispel magic. If you want to deal with loads of them at once I would argue anti-magic field kills them off if they are in the aura, so you could just run through the army instantly killing them whilst they have no real...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running NPC allies

Not sure if this helps, but I typically don't give the party healers/ if they have any healing capability its purely physical such as first aid or bandages. In my experience I have found good old fashioned fighter builds (i.e. soldier) to be both useful, yet not taking the limelight. Also...

    D&D 5E (2014) Group Rule Deal-Breakers

Agreed. It depends on the player sometimes though, I know a few people who can pull those characters off without being obnoxious but then I also know a number of players who use their characters backstory and alignment as an excuse to justify actions they just feel like doing at that moment of time.
