    Arcanist playtest

I'll take one last stab at this, then I'll give up. Or even purer and simpler: Before: Initial damage + more damage(monsters turn) + monster can do anything it wants + monster doesn't need to move anywhere. After: Initial damage + no damage + monster can do anything it wants + monster must...

    Arcanist playtest

How is that relevant to start-of-turn or end-of-turn damage? Yes, they can attack and move away. End-of-turn doesn't prevent that. Neither does start-of-turn (unless it actually kills them). But end-of-turn encouraged them to move away, something start-of-turn was unable to do. I house-ruled...

Player 1 'grabs and pulls' player 2, then claims it's 'Forced movement, no AtOp'

Pulling your ally is a Standard action, not a Move action. Aren't you both supposed to be doing something better? Like attacking the enemies? "Sillyness"? We are merely quoting you the Rules As Written. You don't like the rules? Fine, make up your own. And, they are called "OAs".

Player 1 'grabs and pulls' player 2, then claims it's 'Forced movement, no AtOp'

Are you really suggesting that players using their one and only standard action each turn to pull each other at half speed "all over the battlefield" is somehow overpowered? Just let the monsters kill them while they're wasting their time pulling each other.

    Bladesinger Preview!

Player characters are exceptional. Therefore fluff like this doesn't apply to them. It went the way of the dodo - killed by evolution. :p Sure, a DM can have a campaign where all bladesingers are eladrin. And all wizards are halflings. But the rules here are quite clear - bladesingers can be...

    Arcanist playtest

This is the same discussion I had last year in my original thread. I still don't understand it. Maybe we just have a different definition of control. I don't consider damage to be control. Sure, a dead monster is very controlled, but control for me is managing how it spends its time before it...

    Arcanist playtest

Ummmm no. You only get damage. No control. But what if they can't take those 5-foot steps? What if they can't do what they need to do from their new positions? Just moving your sphere in a random way won't give you much control. You want to force the enemy into positions less favourable for...

Because that decision is not influenced by the presence of the sphere. The damage has already been delivered. Staying or moving away will result in exactly the same amount of damage. Remember that the sphere is mobile and it only costs a move action to follow the enemy. Basically, with...

    Arcanist playtest

Of course it's a loss. They need to move from that position. That is what battlefield control is all about. Forcing the enemy out of their chosen positions. This is giving the enemy a choice. Stay put and take damage or give up your position and avoid the damage. It is start-of-turn damage...

    Bladesinger Preview!

OK, so the first nine pages of this PDF is an actual excerpt from the new campaign book from Wizards? What confuses me is why this is not on the WotC website rather than posted all over the Internet?

But even if they get out, they have already taken the damage. So it's not really a choice for them. Now, with damage at end-of-turn, they do have choice. Remain and take damage or get out and avoid it. I house-ruled Flaming Sphere to end-of-turn damage over a year ago, and I can tell you that...

    Bladesinger Preview!

I'm confused. Whose preview? In what context? The link seems to lead to some community page and some fan upload. Do we know this guy? Why are we supposed to care what he posts?

Does the Monster Builder build monsters yet?

Silverlight is in itself very capable for this job (if their programmers know what they are doing), so that shouldn't be the reason for the delay. My guess is that they are implementing the Monster Builder in Silverlight 5, since printing is supposed to actually work in that version. Which, of...

In Defense of the Theory of Dissociated Mechanics

Justin doesn't like 4e, so he's trying to rationalize why no one should like it. It's not a theory, it's a diatribe. On the other hand, there is a valid reason why some people has a hard time with 4e. I'd like to borrow terms from meta-physics and differentiate between Immanence and...

    The Future of D&D

Yes, you would certainly need to limit the access to conditions when using a near-flat power curve. I can see two schemes that are much simpler the present progression madness. 1. Near-flat: Monster increase attacks and defences +1/half-tier. Characters increase all abilities by +1 at level...

It'd be funny if it wasn't so close to the truth

My only comment to that guy:

    The Future of D&D

I can see one point here. If my 1st level Feylock attacks Orcus with Eyebite, he's looking at +4 attack bonus vs. 49 Will. Take away Orcus' level bonus and that goes down to +4 vs. 16 Will - quite possible to achieve. Then the party wizard attacks with a dazing attack, or stunning... When it...

Or, rather, the other way around. Acrobatics vs. Reflex or Athletics vs. Fortitude.
