D&D 5E (2014) What needs to be fixed in 5E?

Thank you!. You just solved the last of my scaling problems in my 4e clone. Your DEX/INT modifier is capped by your STR modifier when applying it to AC with heavy armour. Perfect!

The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over. But it can't. Not with out your help. But you're not helping. Why is that?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm already thoroughly confused by this thread...

D&D 5E (2014) What needs to be fixed in 5E?

Wow, there's some seriously good discussion going on here. It really got my brain working. A few rough ideas that surfaced from the depths of my grey matter: Regarding organization of powers; I think it's a good idea to have most of the powers organized by power source and a smaller number by...

D&D 5E (2014) What needs to be fixed in 5E?

Sure. And since Aikido is supposed to be based on old samurai fighting techniques, we could probably argue a long time about how well a D&D fighter should know these. But, more importantly, do we really want to penalize this action? Why would we want to deter the prone fighter from spending his...

D&D 5E (2014) What needs to be fixed in 5E?

And I've trained Aikido for more than 30 years. I can assure you I'm more defenseless lying prone than while I'm getting up. Look up hanmi-handachi if you want.

D&D 5E (2014) What needs to be fixed in 5E?

It doesn't make any sense to me. You can defend yourself a whole lot better while getting up than if you stay prone. I can see an argument about not getting up triggering an OA, since it's hard to defend yourself lying on the ground. Yes, it helps against ranged attacks, but if we're talking...

D&D 5E (2014) What needs to be fixed in 5E?

Why? (Aside from the fact that it was that way in 3.x) You can shift one square with a move action without triggering an OA, but you shouldn't be able to stand up within the same square without one? Both actions seems like rather minor movement to me, so I see no realism requirement for it...

    Monte Cook back at wizards

This is exactly the same problem we had with SWSE. A fun game, but far too often grievious wounds forced the players to take a vacation mid-adventure. If I should start a new campaign in SWSE, I would most definitely try to graft healing surges onto to the game.

    D&D 5E (2014) Weighing in on 5e

Your proposed system is mathematically the same as: Roll d20 and add your stat. If it's equal or greater than the target DC + 20, it's good happy success time. So all you've done is changed all DCs and made your stat twice as influential as today (and presented it in a way much harder to use)...

    Death and Dying

I never claimed it did. As you say, DMG took precedence over PHB when they differed. We never saw that piece of Sage Advice, but then we seldom read Sage Advice. Maybe it was later changed to be optional, but my point was just that 1e AD&D had a rule (at least for some time) that you were still...

    Death and Dying

Optional in what way? It's under HIT POINTS on page 82 in my old DMG. I don't see any indication of it being optional.

You need to re-read your old DMG, DS. ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) Weighing in on 5e

I read and post in the 4e discussion forum because I play 4e on a regular basis. It's a great game. If you have a problem with my posts, you might want to take it up with the moderators instead of being insulting.

    D&D 5E (2014) Weighing in on 5e

Well, in this case Joe was merely pointing to the lying done by WotC about a year ago regarding the future of the DDI Character Builder. There is nothing toxic about pointing out that lie. Bitter, but not toxic. I didn't jump on you and I'm not engaging in hypocrisy. But I'm still waiting for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weighing in on 5e

"False accusations"?? I distinctly remember being lied to by WotC around a year ago. That lie was the major reason I cancelled my DDI account and why I'm no longer a customer of said company. I don't see what your problem is and why you post in such a toxic way.

Resist 5 - how does it work

I don't even see how that is possible with any of the rulings. Even with Dracos ruling, which I have argued for also, Resist X All is vastly superior to Resist X <specific damage type>, since you can apply it against any type of damage, even untyped damage. What kind of ruling would make it...

Resist 5 - how does it work

How on earth do you figure that? If you admixture fire into an attack that does 2d6 acid damage, you get 2d6 acid and fire damage. The first one can be resisted with Resist X Acid, but against the second one you need both Resist X Acid and Resist X Fire. How does that make the power weaker?

Resist 5 - how does it work

Well, yes. There are three different kinds of expressions. Single type damage (including untyped damage) which presents no problems. Then there is split damage (1d10 damage plus 1t6 fire damage) and combined damage (2d8 cold and necrotic damage). The combined one gives no problems, but the split...

Resist 5 - how does it work

No, not quite. To me it makes sense. A single resistance is useful against damage of a single type. Against damage of a combined type (necrotic and cold) you need to combine your resistances into a single value before applying it (and there are clear rules for that). The suggested rule for...
