Gnomes! (HUH) What are they good for? Absolutely nothing!

They're also the only demi-human race in 1st edition that could be illusionists. And the only race that could be a multiclass illusionist/thief. I think that's what the trickster idea grew out of.

Gnomes! (HUH) What are they good for? Absolutely nothing!

I would argue that halflings have just as big of a problem. They've changed more than gnomes over several editions. Ok so they're hobbits. No? Oh they're like talkative inquisitive 'acquirers' like kender. No? Oh they're wandering gypsies. No? Oh they're river folk? Where the hell did that come...

    Enlarge Familiar

Hey Grogg, I'd say yes. From the familiar section under wizards in the 3.5 srd: "Hit Dice For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use the master’s character level or the familiar’s normal HD total, whichever is higher." So even though your familiar looks like a 1/4HD raven...

    Enlarge Familiar

The problem is if the familiar moves more than 5 feet from the caster it reverts to its original form. That's a big drawback. I think the op would do better creating a spell specifically for his familiar. Or polymorph would work. There are stats for a giant raven in frostburn.

    Enlarge Familiar

If it were me, I would start with the augment familiar spell from the spell compendium and work from there. Maybe make it a third level spell to increase the familiar's size and spell duration as well as the other benefits granted by the original.

Pathfinder miniatures ... are folks using these much?

I have a bunch of them. I like them, but they are definitely more fragile than the Wizards prepainted minis. They're releasing some interesting stuff that I haven't seen in other sets from other companies (prepainted-wise) - Skull and Shackles had some great figures in it for aquatic/seafaring...

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: The Little Guys

Really great reading and much more in line with my thinking on these two races, except much more thought put into it than I ever have. ;-) Kudos to you and thanks for sharing.

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: The Little Guys

It's all opinion, of course. Personally I don't like cutesie goblins. I don't like cutesie kobolds. Well, unless it's a ruse to convince a compassionate group of PCs to let their guard down so their throats can be slit while they sleep. A comic goblin contrasting what is a wicked and sadistic...

    Favorite D&D Retroclone?

ACKS for the domain rules, carousing and hi-jinx for thiefly classes, pretty fantastic economics system, the upcoming mass combat system, and the proficiency system (which I find to be awesome - not clunky at all IMHO). Astonishing Swords and Sorcerers of Hyperboria for the classes, writing...

Best rules for large scale battles, running kingdoms?

The Kickstarter for Domains at War by Autarch is closed and the books aren't out yet... I think they are due out this fall. I found those rules to be far superior to War Machine - especially if you're looking for something that works with OSR games (D&D Next would work just as well with it - the...

    D&D 5E (2014) L&L 1/7/2013 The Many Worlds of D&D

I like it - although I also agree with others on here that 'Ravenloft' should be a domain in the Shadowfell and not the other way around. There are specific tropes in Ravenloft that I don't feel are necessarily universal enough to represent the entirety of a plane of shadow. The Shadowfell seems...

D&D 5E (2014) Should the next edition of D&D promote more equality?

Yeah, it bugged me too. To me, it looks ridiculous. Of all the 4th edition art, this bugged me only marginally less than entire art conceptualization of the Wilden. Whoever steered the art department in that direction must have had an unhealthy obsession with Cats! The Musical. The iconic Wilden...

    Autarch Domains at War Kickstarter

If you're at all interested in armies clashing, siege warfare, battlefield magic, high-level 'domain' play, recruiting armies, building and deploying forces to take a castle or city, raiding supply lines, etc. I don't think I can do it justice by trying to explain how good it is. It also allows...

Kickstarter Anyone supporting the Dwarven Forge Kickstarter

I'm supporting. I have a number of their sets and they are fantastic looking and very durable. And the customer service is top notch as well. A really great company all around. Kudos to them - I'm glad this kickstarter is turning out to be such a success.

    Kickstarter DCM KickStarter Gearing Up

Yep, I agree. Looking good, and I'm really loving the clip-on banners, torches, and markers you're developing for the minis that you've previewed with the peryton. Good stuff.

Shadow evocation and how to figure out spell DC

It seems clear to me, it's an illusion. The 'balancing' factor is that it grants the target two saving throws to mitigate the effects of the spell. The spell type doesn't change into an evocation or conjuration after the target fails their saving throw to believe it - it remains an illusion. The...
