Upgrading your old mount/companion/familiar: How to say goodbye to your old pal?

Druids have great social skills when dealing with animals, plus we were pretty high-level at the time which made us intimidating even if we didn't have the Intimidate skill. A 9th-level druid can cast Dominate Animal* multiple times, summon large elementals, etc, which made my PC particularly...

Upgrading your old mount/companion/familiar: How to say goodbye to your old pal?

My group did Kingmaker some years back. One PC had a horse with the Wild Cohort feat (or some similar class ability or trait, etc) who was more powerful than him (he was a bard), but after a couple of sessions the player was dissatisfied and converted to a magus. (Same background, name...

Do you like to use an Anti-Party?

I had fun with this in 4e. I did a Dark Sun campaign some years back. The penultimate encounter involved an NPC party, where each PC-equivalent was an elite. It was a nail-biter. Turns out NPC elite leaders (yes, I used a little healing) draw so much hate, but they cannot be killed in one round...

    D&D 3.x Is there a D&D 3.5 mechanic for ritual casting?

I like the house rule, and if I were still running 3e or Pathfinder I would adopt it, except for part of this sentence. Full range of spells... Reminds me of Persistent Spell. WotC put some effort into restricting what spells it could apply to, but it's a doomed effort. Eventually some spell...

    Basic Four

It was pretty swingy, and I liked 3e's cyclical initiative better. But I know there's fans of round-by-round initiative; the system did have a few benefits. I think it existed to help balance magic vs non-magic. Powerful spells often took a long time to cast (relative to the speed of a weapon)...

    Basic Four

I prefer to set XP to campaign events. You get XP for collecting that loot, killing that enemy general, etc, regardless if you did so stealthily or murderously. This means the adventure isn't always about getting loot (so getting loot wouldn't be worth XP in that particular adventure) whereas...

Free [Gamer Printshop] Rude Awakening - FREE one-shot module and map set

I downloaded this (twice) and opened it with two programs. Each time I get an error message, so I can't read it. I downloaded it from Paizo. The two files should be identical, but I guess they're not. The Paizo version worked when unzipped.

    D&D 3.x Is there a D&D 3.5 mechanic for ritual casting?

Did you ever look into 4e? In 4e, rituals are generally long-lasting spells, often less combat-focused than 4e's spells. A lot of spells, like Drawmij's Instant Summons, are rituals in 4e. They can take minutes or even hours to perform. Control Weather is a ritual. Brew Potion is a ritual (and...

Does this sound like a compelling/workable encounter?

This sounds compelling to me. I think the biggest hook is the risk to NPCs and property. PCs are tough, even at 1st-level, but the goblins can bypass them and burn stuff up. :)

    D&D 4E [4e] I am unconscious. Am I also bloodied?

Thank you for the answers. Darkbard, I had seen the thread you linked before but I couldn't find it. (I didn't realize it was in the Character Builds & Optimization forum, and didn't remember its name.)

    D&D 4E [4e] I am unconscious. Am I also bloodied?

Just a quick question. If a character is knocked unconscious, are they also considered bloodied? I once played a Gamma World game, where my character dealt damage in an aura when bloodied. At one point, I was knocked unconscious, and another PC slid the body next to bad guys :D The GM ruled...

    Elder blacksmith

I would use a feat, and it's possible there's already a feat for this. There's already precedent for having a magical weapon that grows with a fighter, despite the fighter not having any magic. The trope seems to come up pretty often in D&D novels, too. If such a feat doesn't exist, I think I...

    Regular dad food?

Social class and (possibly) species would play a role in what you're eating. Some species might have less of a social class system. Geography plays a role. In the real world, some food sources (such as the potato) were found only in some regions until humanity developed reliable long-distance...

Tanar'ri with Lightning Bolt or similar ability?

I think you could add a lightning theme to a demon. Something obvious (such as crackling electrical auras) so it's not a complete surprise.

Pathfinder 1E According to... uh the guy who pickled us.

It's just a (poorly-named) amulet. It's as useful for a druid as for a monk. That's just part of the game. Nothing can be done about it, except spells usually only require rolls from the opponent. Of which spell? I hope that was your decision (to inflict PTSD on your character) and not the...

    Braille for wizards

A prestige class? That doesn't suit this suggestion. You could make Braille a language and/or require a feat, and it would take longer to read or write magic in Braille. You would also want a low-level spell that could write in Braille (while any wizard could theoretically learn to read it...

The Journey To...Romance Of The Three Kingdoms

I once did a "d20 Modern" campaign in this setting in the Yellow Turban period. (It seemed the best way to do no-magic D&D-like at the time.) However, finding a large enough group of people familiar with Three Kingdoms is kind of hard. For the most part I only had two players (and an NPC doctor).

Warlords Implement : Mark of Authority / Family Crest.

I don't think using an "implement" makes sense, rather, a fairly large wondrous item that you could "plant" as a standard action and get a bonus, or a crest on your armor or shield that must be clearly visible to give benefits. But it does it really make sense to be connected to authority or...

    Battlerager Vigor... by the book

That version of the blackguard uses its thp as a resource. The line "I whip myself" came up a lot. It just didn't seem as broken as the original battlerager. (I didn't think there was a thirst for that "combat style" before it came out.)

Is anyone still playing d20 Modern?

I used to run Modern a lot, but I now believe the best game for modern or sci-fi is something rules-light like Fate. I really liked talents, but gradually realized I was the only one who did. Every single third-party product seemed to hate them, and found themselves crammed with Advanced...
