D&D General Do you play D&D (or other RPGs) with your family?

No. I have a cousin who might be interested, but he lives far away. None of my siblings have any interest in the game.

D&D 4E Anyone playing 4e at the moment?

I played a session yesterday, online. It was the second session but the first with combat. Our party has no spellcasters and we all have high Charisma scores :) The slowed condition hurts more than I remember.

D&D 5E (2014) All I do is Bless, Bless, Bless

I'm starting a 4e campaign again (as a player). I used to use Lance of Feith a lot, so I could attack and buff in the same round. Guiding Bolt in 5e works the same way but it's not a cantrip :( Still if you aren't using up spell slots that may be a good idea, even if it's less powerful than...

D&D General "For 4 to 6 characters of 6th to 9th level" - Notes on the intro to a Dungeon adventure

I always thought of it as four higher level characters or six lower level characters. Of course there was an issue with different XP amounts required per level.

    D&D 5E (2014) Creating a Wealth Score in 5e D&D

As a former d20 Modern GM, I have to say ... do not do this! D20 Modern didn't have "lifestyle costs" so nobody had to buy anything. My first PC was a martial artist who only ever bought two things: a leather jacket, and a "magic stick" that someone conned him into buying. (Many PCs ran out of...

D&D General Has the meaning of "roleplaying" changed since 1e?

I've played two RPG video games recently, Mass Effect (Legendary Edition) and Cyberpunk 2077, the latter literally being based on a traditional tabletop RPG. In both cases, your characters gain level, get gear upgrades, and roleplay. I think roleplaying has a lot of disparate parts; you could...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sacred Cows: Ability Scores

That is twice as powerful. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but point increases might have to be spread out more.

    D&D 5E (2024) Sacred Cows: Ability Scores

I am almost fine with this, but how would you handle level-based stat increases? I haven't played Planescape: Torment but apparently it had this, relieving one of 2e's problems (frequently very weak PCs).

D&D General No More "Humans in Funny Hats": Racial Mechanics Should Determine Racial Cultures

I think you would have a hard time for some races. Halflings are especially difficult, since they were intended to be short humans without any powers. The biggest difference is a higher metabolic rate (so they eat more). From what I see of your previous work, you gave them a completely different...

D&D General What wastes time at your table?

Not knowing the rules is probably the biggest obstacle. I started playing video games after a hiatus and (if I want to keep playing) I have been forced to learn how to play the game. The game doesn't have a GM to remind you of things. If you don't learn, your character dies (or otherwise fails)...

D&D General New Drizzt trilogy! Starting with Starlight Enclave!

He is unrecognizable without a beard.

    D&D 5E (2014) High Magic Economy Idea

I didn't accuse you of that. Shadowrun has a purchasable lifestyle cost, which meant you simply deducted that money per month, then looked at your supply of cash and realized you had better get out there and do a job soon. Games that don't have these easily calculated expenses (like d20...

    D&D 5E (2014) High Magic Economy Idea

Some game systems had rules like this (eg Shadowrun) but in the main this would annoy PCs in many settings.

Pathfinder 1E When you forget to coordinate party composition.

It's been my experience that the GM needs to fix such a situation. Way back in 2e days, our group was uncoordinated. Our last 2e campaign only had one "healer" at campaign start, a paladin who could heal 2 hit points per day. The GM gave us more healing potions than you would find in a video...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

I haven't used alignment beyond "session zero, no outright evil PCs" in years. The best replacement for alignment, IMO, is the Mass Effect Paragon vs Renegade construct, and I'd like to point out the first game mishandled that. (Renegade was basically "act stupid".) I saw a superior alignment...

D&D General Saves as Target Numbers

Yes. I especially liked how warlords could assist ("buff") spellcasters, not just other warriors.

    D&D 5E (2014) () What would you want for 5e Birthright?

I wish I could give a detailed answer to this, but my experience with Birthright was very short, one prep session. I didn't like randomly rolling for abilities (this isn't Gamma World!) and didn't end up with any. IIRC you could end up with no, minor, or major abilities. To be fair, starting...

D&D General Let's talk about Domains, War, Leadership and Sundry

The biggest issues I have with this style is play is two-fold: 1. Some players just aren't interested in it. This isn't relevant to this thread, since presumably you get player input before you start such a campaign. 2. Some PCs just aren't interested in it. This is especially important if your...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

I'm pretty sure defiling destroys water over time, hence the creation of the Silt Sea. However, I'm pretty sure casting defiling spells in the short time doesn't turn the contents of your waterskins into silt!

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

In 2e, a water cleric could chew a root or something and have enough water for the day. They couldn't gate a lot of water; that spell had to be nerfed for the setting to make sense. Defiling has been damaging the local spirits so clerics have been getting weaker over time.
