Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

The Hobbit was read to the class in primary school. I was probably about 7. The teacher mentioned that there was a sequel called Lord of the Rings, but it would be too difficult for me to read. I guess I read LotR when I was around 12, around the same time I started playing D&D. However...

Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set Price Point Revealed

Yeah, there has being something of a revival in adult boardgames in the last couple of years. Possibility not unconnected to COVID, possibly gamers coming out from behind their screens when they discover they have family.

    WAR OF THE WORLDS Trailer

The 2019 British TV version was set in 1905. Like most WotW adaptations, it was terrible.

D&D 5E (2024) Here's The Covers of BOTH of November's Forgotten Realms Books

Sure they are different. But the second picture has a greater range blur than the first. The first figure is crisp, but the caster at the back is blurred. There are also three levels of blur in the background. The new book has only two levels - crisp for the characters (and the rocks they are...

D&D 5E (2024) Here's The Covers of BOTH of November's Forgotten Realms Books

I’m not sure what picture you are looking at, but I can’t see any blurring at all in the figures. Is your device showing a low res version? Blur is good in art. For example, they could have used some motion blur to make it look less static, or close to the viewer blur on the tip of Minsc’s...

D&D 5E (2024) Here's The Covers of BOTH of November's Forgotten Realms Books

There is Drizzt’s mother too, and Viconia - she is either dead or a villain now. But I guess you could extend the list to include Druids, since it’s a healer that’s desired. Which would give us Pikel Bouldershoulder, Jalhera and Halsin.

They aren’t out of focus. It would have been better if it had had more depth of field effect.

    Why do the Actors Matter?

I vaguely knew Brian Cox before he was famous. But some of the older, less famous professors were warmer and wittier. I guess that is where he learned his media persona from.

D&D 5E (2024) Here's The Covers of BOTH of November's Forgotten Realms Books

It’s a FR book, not just the Sword Coast. But the thing is, FR is a generic setting - there is nothing unique about it apart from the characters who live there.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

That's like saying the weather is caused by stepping outside your door. The idea of "simulationist" is there is always weather. The DM doesn't need to determine it if the PCs are not in a position to observe it, because a human DM is not omniscient. That's why it is a simulation of reality, and...

Forgotten Realms Books to Have Several Digital DLCs, Including One Featuring Asterion

Nobody is doing it because the costs are massively high. But if you want to see, just pick up a magazine or comic from the shelves and compare it to the price of a similar thing from the 1970s (allowing for average inflation). My first job involved printing maps, using a mechanical process...

    Spoilers Superman Spoiler Thread

Comic book art uses a lot of standard poses. Most of it has to be drawn quickly, and the focus is on communicating the story, not massively original compositions.

D&D 5E (2024) Here's The Covers of BOTH of November's Forgotten Realms Books

There is indeed one detail that is very videogamish: Karlach’s axe. How is it attached to her back? It’s common in video games for 2H weapons to attach to character’s backs as if they are magnetic. More realisticly, it would have to be strapped, with the blade end at the top, and could not be...

Jarlaxle has revolving door morality. Which makes him a good fit for the BG3 gang. And you really wouldn't want two melee rangers in a party.

Forgotten Realms Books to Have Several Digital DLCs, Including One Featuring Asterion

A ton of stuff ends up on the cutting room floor - far more than ever makes it into print. That’s the backstory behind The Mortuary. No, they are not, they are going to be short adventures, similar to the ones in the print books. Subclasses will be in print books, so people have to pay for...

Practicality aside, I can afford optometry, but there is only so much corrective optics can do. But that highlights just how much of a rich persons’ problem this is.

    Why do the Actors Matter?

Quite. Although I think Bixby did a better job of combining traumatised with being a likeable character who we care about.

Forgotten Realms Books to Have Several Digital DLCs, Including One Featuring Asterion

And we should demand we also always have eyesight that is good enough to read them? Everything is ephemeral, whether you buy it or not. In order to sell a print book, there would have to be someone who wants to buy it. You can’t guarantee that, and you can’t force the publisher to buy it back...
