D&D 5E (2014) CR of LMoP Encounters - Spoiler of side quests

I believe they had just made 3rd level before taking on the Wyvern Tor encounter. We're using the LMoP to learn the system and I have no doubt they wouldn't make the same mistakes now, but at the time, I really thought I'd have a TPK on my hands. I love 5E, but it's pretty swingy at times, so...

D&D 5E (2014) CR of LMoP Encounters - Spoiler of side quests

Yeah, I ran this encounter for my group of four PCs and they barely survived, mostly through luck. I did break the encounter into two parts, having them first encounter half the orcs separately, but the PC wizard blew all of his first level spells against the few orcs, then they hung around...

D&D 5E (2014) How well can your players and NPCs maintain concentration for spells?

A quick update. The party had two very tough fights last night and the cleric maintained concentration on his Bless spell despite multiple hits. Then I realized this morning that I was giving him the +1d4 from the Bless spell to his concentration check. That's wrong - Bless only affects attack...

D&D 5E (2014) How well can your players and NPCs maintain concentration for spells?

My group uses some small chips (like those in an Axis and Allies game) to mark when someone is concentrating, has a boon (like Bless), is making death saves and the like. Works well to keep us from forgetting. As for concentration checks, the cleric has blown a couple checks, but at our levels...

D&D 5E (2014) Favorite change and thing you like better before

Favorite: All of the above, but if I have to pick one, I actually like that the first couple levels go quickly, then advancement slows down. Seems to work well with my group. Dislike: Stats giving +1 for every two points above 10. I'd much prefer +1 for every 3 or 4 points, not every two. For...

    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Proficiency Question

Not sure what you mean by "interfere with". Per a clarification from Mike Mearls, a character can have multiple different formulas for calculating base AC and gets to choose one of those formulas. A shield then adds to the base AC. So mage armor gives a character 13+Dex base AC, and a shield...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e druid spells (excel sheet) by level & descriptions

This is definitely useful, but given that all the info is from the PHB, subject to copyright, I suspect this has too much info to be allowed for public posting. You can of course use it for your own personal use, I'm just questioning if posting basically the entire contents of a section of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) I Want a Spell Summary List

Here's one I put together based on Ari's, with some additional info, including range. It doesn't have damage type or dice, but you could easily add that yourself.

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternate ability generation rule

Whereas one of my favorite 1E characters was a wizard with a 17 INT and a 4 STR. He made it to 13th level before my group stopped playing D&D.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mitigating Critical Hit Devastation

I'd suggest a simpler solution: on a crit, all the dice are maxed, but no additional dice are rolled. You'll still get significant damage, but unlikely to auto-kill PC's unless they are low level and already seriously wounded.

Non-cliche slavery in fantasy campaign settings?

You're once again making a broad generalization about campaigns which I don't believe is backed by any data. As a single data point, I've never played in a campaign where "you have hundreds of 20th-level wizards". I can't think of a single published campaign that made such a statement, though...

Non-cliche slavery in fantasy campaign settings?

    1. I'm unsure that one can say "Most fantasy campaign settings use the field slave/serfdom model of slavery where the slaves are treated horrifically, being regularly worked to death, casually beaten, raped or murdered", since slavery is rarely included in any published setting, and we have no...

    X-COM to DnD

Fantasy X-Com - neat idea. I may have to steal this. I was thinking that another resource could be "Fame". The more successful the operation, the more likely it is to attract special troops. As mentioned above, you still need money to pay for things, but recruiting anything beyond your basic...

List Some Interesting Ideas for Super Weapons

One of my favorite ideas for a fantasy doomsday weapon is from a Larry Niven story. In the story, the world has wizards able to wield mana, which is a consummable resource. One wizard creates an disk of metal that cannot be shattered. The disk use mana to spin. The faster it spins, the more mana...

Faulty assumption of responsibility by villains

I would suggest many movies have something like this. Example: Hero knows of a plot to cause mass mayhem, e.g., a building will be blown up, killing hundreds. He hops in his truck and races to the site. He arrives in time, defuses the bomb, saves the day. But...several other people are in the...
