    D&D 5E (2014) Considering a new concentration mechanic

An interesting idea. And yes, with my group, concentration spells are cast in pretty much every encounter, so the potential for losing concentration due to damage comes up all the time. As a general rule, I'd be inclined to apply LC to spells that buff the target (blur, primordial ward...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fun with Assasins

One possibility is to have the PCs hear about the assassin, perhaps because he/she/it takes out someone unrelated to them - a minor princeling, a high priest, a rich merchant. Or maybe the assassin is so infamous, every unsolved murder is inevitably blamed on him. "Hmm. This was a professional...

    D&D 5E (2014) Demon Lord Summoning Ideas

I haven't played CoS, but if the players are supposed to slay Strahd, a really nasty idea is to tie the summoning of Orcus to Strahd's death. The lich completes all the other requirements of the ritual, but the last piece is for some reason beyond his power. The lich (behind the scenes) assists...

    D&D 5E (2014) That’s a lot of charcoal! Find Familiar problem

I agree with the responses, the cost includes other materials than just charcoal. That said, I think I'll create an NPC wizard who's a bit dotty, leading a mule with sacks and sacks of charcoal. He was taught an inferior version of the spell that only uses charcoal - lots of charcoal. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Freeform Magic System for 5e?

Don't forget Elements of Magic by EnWorld's RangerWickett (Ryan Nock). http://www.rpgnow.com/product/2554/Elements-of-Magic-Revised?it=1 I haven't seen anything comparable for 5E, though there have been stray comments about the idea.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic items for a moon druid

One item I used is a belt made of troll skin. If worn and attuned, it allows a druid to spend both wildshape uses to wildshape into a troll. It gives the druid a more powerful form, but at the expense of only being able to wildshape once per short/long rest. Given that you're running a PotA...

    D&D 5E (2014) Conjure Random Creatures

I like the flavor of only summoning dinosaurs, so I'd use a random table of only dinosaurs. If there aren't enough of each CR, I'd suggest re-skinning some beasts as dinosaurs. Just modify their appearance and give them Latin-sounding names and you're good to go.

D&D 5E (2014) Question using Spell Points variant rule in Sorcerer

For simplicity, we allow a sorcerer to cast 2 spells of levels 6 and 7, and only 1 spell of levels 8 and 9, so long as he has spell slots of those levels. It's a bit easier than the spell slot matrix, which only allows 2 level 6 spells at caster level 19 and 2 level 7 spells at caster level 20...

D&D 5E (2014) Question using Spell Points variant rule in Sorcerer

That's how my group is running it - spell points and sorcery points add together into a single pool of points. It does give the sorcerer some additional flexibility for using metamagic, but it hasn't been overpowered at all. It also simplifies the character a bit, as I only have to track a...

D&D 5E (2014) My 20th Level Rogue wants to use Stroke of Luck to tame a demonically possessed red dragon...

I agree with Nevvur, this should be a persuasion check, or something similar. The problem, of course, is that the dragon is demon possessed, so is the rogue attempting to convince the demon or the dragon? As for wish, I'd certainly allow a wish to both drive out the demon and allow the dragon...

D&D 5E (2014) I guess this could be general rpg ,but Im playing 5e so... let's do something constructive. Let's build a world. Post a location.

I believe I first got this idea from a Larry Niven story: Massive creatures the size of small islands. They hibernate for centuries, only rousing for a year to reproduce. They float in the air a few hundred feet above ground level. Various creatures, including some intelligent humanoids, lair...

    D&D 5E (2014) BBEG Help

I really like Iserith's idea. Along those lines, you could have her immune to all damage as her heart (or whatever) is elsewhere. The party have to locate and destroy the source of her power, then she becomes vulnerable. If you're intent on making it about hitting her, you could adapt an idea I...

5e custom Barbarian totem spirit animal: Displacer Beast!

I copied the language from the MM entry for the displacer beast, so "it" refers to the barbarian. I'll edit the post to be clearer. I really like your idea for the 14th level ability. Using that on an NPC opponent could freak out some players. :D

    D&D 5E (2014) New Metamagic - Uplift

At first glance, this is not overpowered. Upcasting is generally a weak option overall, except for specific spells. (Upcasting bless to cover more people is great. Upcasting fireball for just an extra 2d6 damage...not so much.) Your option is cheaper than creating a spell slot, but that's okay...

Definitely Jack Vance's Dying Earth stories. If you're looking for a recommendation, try Songs of the Dying Earth. It's a collection of stories that aren't written by Jack Vance, but are set in that universe. There are some outstanding stories in the collection by some very good authors, such as...

5e custom Barbarian totem spirit animal: Displacer Beast!

One thing to keep in mind is that Aspect of the Beast totems do not typically give combat abilities, so I would not do so with the displacer beast totem. See below for my suggestions across all levels for this path. TOTEM SPIRIT At 3rd level, when you adopt this path, you choose a totem spirit...

    D&D 5E (2014) Group Rule Deal-Breakers

That used to be my table, until one of the players started bringing his teenage kids. So now we're strictly PG, with a dash of PG-13 when the bad guys are being really bad. On the plus side, gaming with teenagers reminds me of the early days. They tend to be a lot more creative and interesting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fast Initiative ideas?

I'm still unsure what issue the OP is having with initiative, but here are some ideas we use at my table to speed it up. 1) At the start of the session, I have each player roll initiative four times, recording the numbers. I add 2-3 initiative rolls for enemies to each set. When an encounter...
