    D&D 5E (2014) Questions about globe of invulnerability 5e

    When asking questions about a specific spell, I find it's always useful to include the full spell description (if it's in the basic rules). Globe of Invulnerability 6th-level abjuration Casting Time: 1 action Range: Self (10-foot radius) Components: V, S, M (a glass or crystal bead that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Choosing NOT to Long Rest?

    Yeah, how I view such play depends heavily on the player. I have one right now who has a habit of gaming the rules, so I have to constantly watch what he does. Gets a bit old, but he's otherwise a good player, so...(shrug). Thinking of him probably affected my response.

    D&D 5E (2014) Choosing NOT to Long Rest?

    I wouldn't allow this for a simple reason: the player is trying to rules-lawyer a limitation on the item or class ability. To me, this is no different than the old "bag of rats" problem - even if the rules say something is technically valid, the GM should run the game as intended. Looking at the...

    D&D 5E (2014) How would you rule on this Dispell Magic?

    Yep, invisibility and hiding has spawned a lot of arguments. My group finally settled on this: Even if you're invisible, if you are not taking the Hide action, others know what space you're in (within a reasonable distance, based on the environment). The only negative in that situation is that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tome of Beasts 5E

    I've used several creatures from the book and those CRs were close enough that there were no serious issues. That said, there are a number of entries where the CRs are way off. If in doubt, compare to same CR creatures from the MM.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell Cards for Beginners v1

    Nice cards! A couple observations: Sacred Flame is spelled Scared Flame on the card. I'd reverse the white on black / black on white color scheme. Maybe just me, but white text on black background just seems like it should be the category/header/whatever, not the spell info. Also, it might be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Arcane multiclassing... does it make sense?

    All analogies are flawed, don't get too hung up on the specifics. All I'm saying is that (per RAW) it's no more difficult for an arcane caster to dip into multiple types of magic than to continue in just one type. You were asking why someone would do that, and my answer is that some folks just...

    D&D 5E (2014) Arcane multiclassing... does it make sense?

    Because some folks are dilettantes. I have a friend who has multiple undergraduate degrees. One might just as well ask, "Well, why didn't you put all that effort into getting a single PhD?" To which he'd likely respond, "Because I found all this other stuff more interesting." If you think of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell -> Counterspell -> Counterspell (from same character that casts 1st spell) - possible?

    Thanks for the clarification. The "caster you can see" is in the casting time section of the spell, so I missed it when I checked the spell description. Counterspell 3rd-level abjuration Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell -> Counterspell -> Counterspell (from same character that casts 1st spell) - possible?

    Maybe, but consider: If the first counterspell-er is hidden, say by greater invisibility, I would not allow the original caster to counterspell. It makes perfect sense to me that you can't counterspell a casting you cannot see. There's also the subtle spell metamagic, which I would treat the...

    D&D 5E (2014) The revival economy

    This was something I considered in my most recent campaign (PotA). I didn't want a world where anyone with a bit of gold could get raised from the dead, but I didn't want to forbid it either. So I made it about more than just money. A beloved NPC died fighting alongside the PCs, so they went...

    D&D 5E (2014) Observations of a new player

    Yep, I saw the same thing when I first introduced a couple players to 5E. One was playing a wizard and kept trying to divide his magic missiles among multiple enemies, thinking they had just a few hit points. Took him a while to realize that these are not the 1/2 HD creatures from AD&D.

    D&D 5E (2014) How do stats work with magical items e.g. Berserker Axe?

    Yep, they have the normal stats, unless the item description in the DMG specifically says otherwise. So adamantine chain mail would have AC 16, with no Dex modifier. Welcome to the boards!

    D&D 5E (2014) Observations of a new player

    I noticed the same thing. When 5E came out, I insisted that all characters start at level 1. But characters achieve level 3 so quickly in this edition (only 900 XP), and 1st level characters are so limited, I recently told my players that new characters will begin at 3rd level. I've heard no...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Sorcerer

    How would you handle multiclassing, such as a bard/sorcerer? One of the things I really like about 5E multiclassing is the single spell slot table used regardless of which classes a character has. If the sorcerer uses spell points, I would think you'd have to keep the two classes slots/points...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pure Preference Poll: Class Choice

    I've always liked running wizards, so that was my vote in the poll. That said, my second choice is cleric. 5E has done a great job with the class. Clerics can support the party well, while having lots of other fun stuff to do.

    D&D 5E (2014) Recommend a 5e AP

    I'm currently playing Out of the Abyss and no one is really enjoying it, neither players nor GM. I ran Princes of the Apocalypse for about 18 months before they finally defeated the Prince. I'd give the module a B- grade. It's somewhat disorganized, the map is really messed up, and the middle...

    AD&D 1E 5e encounters vs. 1e encounters

    Yes, 1E had encounter building guidelines, though they were basically "Based on the level of the dungeon, roll on this table, put that monster in the room." As for winging it, it takes time to become comfortable enough with a system to build encounters on the fly. For me, I'd say it took about...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Sorcerer

    re: WOTC. Not sure that matters. These threads are useful for ideas, whether or not those ideas make it into the next version of the rules. re: Overpowered. You may be right. Sorcerer strikes me as an interesting outlier among the classes: it seems to shine most at high levels. Most classes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building a better Sorcerer

    I really like this list. The only thing I would add is more metamagic options to choose from, and giving sorcerers a couple more metamagics known (possibly based on origin).
